PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Spradlin’s 1st-team nod leads Cullman trio of NSCAA All-State selections

Jacob Brown wasn’t shy this spring about his belief Hannah Spradlin was the best goal keeper in Class 6A girls soccer.

The senior’s All-State first-team selection Monday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) proved the Cullman coach right.

Spradlin was one of three Lady Bearcats to land on one of the NSCAA’s three honorary 6A squads. Kaitlin Cook earned a second-team nod at midfielder, and Christina Skinner was an honorable mention defender.

Spradlin, Cullman’s captain for a 2015 campaign worth the acknowledgment the program desired, spent her farewell tour racking up 11 last shutouts and 179 last saves while giving up less than a goal a game. Her 16 goals yielded are a new team low. Her 12 shutouts in 2014 and 30 career shutouts are highs.

“I’m extremely proud of her and ecstatic that the state finally gave her the credit she deserves,” Brown said. “I knew she was the best for the past two years and I’m so happy that she ended her soccer career on a high note. She will be sorely missed.”

Cook, just a sophomore, was solid in every aspect for the Black and Gold offense, collecting a team-high 49 points on a pair of hat tricks, 17 goals overall — two came on penalty kicks — and 15 assists.

Skinner scored two goals but made the majority of her contributions with a ferocity on defense that won’t show up on any stat sheet.

The junior and Cook are expected to be two major pieces to the puzzle next spring as the ’Cats look to build on a 17-4-1 record and second-round playoff appearance. They closed out the regular season third in the state’s 6A rankings.
