The two victims who were killed in a Thursday-night car crash near Morris have been officially identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Ryan Christopher Washburn, 18, of Morris and Carson Nolan Thomas, 16, of Gardendale died after the car they were riding in ran off the road and overturned.

Washburn had just graduated from Mortimer Jordan High School, and Thomas was to enter his junior year in August. Another passenger, Greg Abramson, had also just graduated from MJHS; he was thrown out of the car on impact, and suffered minor injuries.

All three were members of the Blue Devils wrestling team.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 6:30 p.m. to the scene in the 6200 block of New Castle Road, close to intersections with Mountain View Road and Cole Road. When they arrived, deputies found a white Lexus with two passengers trapped inside. Abramson had been thrown clear of the vehicle.

Washburn and Thomas were pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary indications show that the car ran off the road, and the driver apparently over-corrected and lost control. That action caused the car to hit an embankment and turn over. The incident remains under further investigation.

[Updated at 12:20 p.m. to confirm that the victims were Mortimer Jordan students, and to add the name of the injured passenger.]
