It’s Friday, after a very busy Thursday…
Weather: Yep, more rain. We’re stuck in a tropical weather pattern, which often results in downpours like Thursday’s which caused minor flooding in north Jefferson County. Today we have a 40 percent chance of more showers and thunderstorms, otherwise mostly cloudy with highs in the middle 80s. More of the same tonight with a 30 percent rain chance and lows in the upper 60s. Saturday’s forecast is the same as Friday, and Sunday will see a slightly higher chance of storms. In fact, we have pretty much the exact same forecast for the next seven days.
Two teens killed in crash. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims of a crash on New Castle Road near Morris last night. Ryan Christopher Washburn, 18, and Carson Nolan Thomas, 16, were killed when the car they were in ran off the road and overturned. A third passenger was thrown out of the car and received relatively minor injuries; his identity has not been made public. Sheriff’s deputies haven’t completed their investigation yet, but preliminary signs indicate the car ran off the road and the driver over-corrected, causing the Lexus to flip over and trapping the two victims inside.
Reductions reduced. The Jefferson County Board of Education voted Thursday to officially cancel almost all of the job losses that were previously part of Supt. Craig Pouncey’s financial improvement plan for the school system. The amended plan still calls for elimination of 21 instructional aide positions, though some will be shifted to a new pre-K program, and union officials hope to find other openings in the system for the rest. The original plan called for a net loss of 162 positions. In other action, Pouncey announced that the proposed restructuring of grades at Corner and Bagley schools will not take place in the upcoming academic year. He attributed the delay to a lack of action by federal courts in their necessary approval of the move. Additionally, the proposed middle school international baccalaureate program has been put off for a year. We’ll have more on both of those developments later today.
Sports: Bad start. Both Auburn and Alabama were defeated in their opening softball games at the NCAA Women’s College World Series on Thursday. The Tigers were downed by LSU 6-1, while the Tide were shut out by Michigan 5-0. Auburn will now face Tennessee tomorrow at 11 a.m., followed by Bama against Oregon.
