Gardendale council approves tax-incentive deal for Serra Kia expansion and renovation

The owners of a Gardendale car dealership will be getting a tax break, which will help them pay for a remodeling and expansion that they hope will boost sales — and by extension, sales tax revenue for the city.
The “revenue-sharing agreement,” as it is officially called, will rebate part of the additional sales tax revenue that Serra Kia generates as a result of the expansion, which will involve tearing down parts of the existing building and replacing them with a new showroom and service write-up area.
The agreement was approved by the Gardendale City Council at its meeting on Thursday, and the taxes to be partially rebated are those over and above what the dealership currently generates. The 1-percent tax enacted by the council to pay in part for the new city school system is not included in the agreement.
Thursday’s meeting featured several job actions, most of them promotions in the Gardendale Police Department.
Brad Cotton was promoted to sergeant, replacing the retiring Jerry Suggs. In a similar move, Mark Kanaday was promoted to sergeant, to fill the spot held by the retiring Rodney Gore.
Kelly Spencer was also moved up to corporal, taking Kanaday’s place.
The council also promoted Jennifer Mayfield to magistrate, hired Cassie Davis as a part-time worker in the public works department, and hired Ashley Burkett as a youth services assistant in the library. Two temporary summer library positions were also filled.
In other business, the council:
• rezoned a small portion of the property in the Cades Cove development on Fieldstown Road, so that Verizon Wireless could install a new tower to improve mobile-device coverage in the area
• renewed the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday for the first full weekend in August
• voted to install new fire hydrants on Iris Drive and Decatur Highway
