- A house lies heavily damaged after a suspected explosion authorities believe was caused by a propane leak. The 89-year-old resident was injured in the blast.
LULA, Okla. — An 86-year-old Lula, Oklahoma resident was injured when her house exploded Tuesday morning. But the only reason she survived the blast was due to a piece of furniture.
Authorities believe a propane leak caused the explosion and led to resident Jean Wofford being injured and trapped in her house.

A relative of Wofford went to check on her after she didn’t answer her phone just before dawn. When he arrived in the dark, he thought the house had been hit by a tornado and called 911.
According to Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Hurley, it appeared propane leaked under the house. He said the force of the explosion blew a large hole in the floor, which buckled and was raised to about eye-level.
Lula Volunteer Fire Chief Kim Johnson said Wofford was in the bedroom and was trapped. Firefighters had to remove debris to get to her. Wofford’s relative said a section of roof had fallen landed on her bedpost and that it was the only thing that kept the roof from crushing her in her bed.
She was placed on a backboard and taken from the house through a large hole in the wall, caused by the explosion.
Wofford was taken to Mercy Hospital in Ada, Oklahoma. A spokesperson for Mercy said Wofford was in good condition as late as Tuesday afternoon. She suffered a broken hip. She had to receive staples to the back of her head.
