“They’re just kicking the can down the road.” That’s what the head of the American Federation of Teachers local said Tuesday morning, after a Jefferson County Board of Education called meeting that lasted all of two minutes. The only action in the meeting was a statement by Superintendent Craig Poncey, who said that the reduction in force that has was passed by the board last Wednesday has been suspended. That wasn’t good enough for Marrianne Hayward, the AFT chief, who accused Pouney of delaying an approval of a revised financial improvement plan until next week’s regularly-scheduled board meeting – which would occur just three days before many of those who were scheduled to lose their jobs will have their contracts run out. Hayward said her union would seek a temporary restraining order against the school system that would prevent any further job actions from being taken.

Sports: That took awhile. Hockey fans were up late last night, as it took three overtime periods to decide the Stanley Cup Playoff game between Chicago and Anaheim. The marathon finally ended well after midnight local time, as Marcel Jruger scored with 3:48 left in the sixth full period of play to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 victory. The game was the longest in the 89-year history of the Hawks, who tied the Western Conference Finals best-of-seven series at a game each. Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals is tonight at 7 in Tampa Bay, with the Lightning beating the New York Rangers in the first game.
