JefCoEd job cuts officially out? The head of a local teacher’s union says she expects Jefferson County Schools Supt. Craig Pouncey to officially recommend that the job cuts he proposed a few weeks ago be reversed, stopping a reduction in force that would have resulted in a net loss of 162 jobs. The JefCoEd Board of Education has called for a special meeting to be held after its usual committee meetings that are on the third Thursday of each month. The reversal comes on the heels of a report from a task force appointed by the board, which recommended removing the parts of Pouncey’s financial improvement plan that called for job reductions. Pouncey’s plan was meant to reduce or eliminate spending that amounted to about $10 million more per year than JefCoEd received in taxes and other revenues.
Sports: No drive for five. The official final results are in from last weekend’s Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association state tournament, and Hayden’s run of state team championships has ended at four. The Wildcats, who led the year-long points race for the title going into the weekend event on Smith Lake, fell to a tie third place after not placing any of its five boats in the top 30. Good Hope moved past Hayden and runner-up Alexandria to win the championship, on the strength of four boats placing in the top 12. Corner placed eighth in the end-of-year standings, its best finish to date. Gardendale finished in 13th place, while Mortimer Jordan – last year’s runners-up – ended up in 17th place.
