PREP ROUNDUP: Fairview’s Hanvey finishes T-4th at state golf tourney

MOBILE — Fairview’s Trey Hanvey bettered his opening-round score by seven shots on Tuesday, carding a solid 2-over 73 at Robert Trent Jones — Magnolia Grove to finish tied for fourth at the Class 5A state golf tournament.
His overall score of 153 was bested only by Guntersville’s Reagan Harrell (142), Russellville’s Eli Hodges (145) and Mortimer Jordan’s Garrett Johnson (145) in the stacked field.
“He grinded out a good score,” Aggie coach Kurt Knight said of Hanvey. “I’m proud of him. He had a great year, and the future is definitely bright.”
Over in the girls 4A-5A division, West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers finished up her final day in Mobile with an 82 (169) and a 10th-place finish.
“Lindsey didn’t play her best, but she put together a solid last round to finish in the top 10,” Warrior coach Jimmy Harbison said. “That’s a great accomplishment. She achieved her goal of making state, so I think the year has been a success.”
Alabama Christian’s Hannah Sager took home the wire-to-wire triumph following a two-day total of 148.
State Decathlon/Heptathlon
Matt Cahoon finished tied for 14th on the final day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association state decathlon on Tuesday.
The Holly Pond sophomore collected his second first-place showing of the two-day event with a throw of 143-07 in the discus, easily clearing the next-best toss by 25 feet.
He also finished seventh in the javelin to aid his top-15 finish in a talented pool of more than 40 athletes.
Fairview’s Bailey Strong notched sixth in the pole vault and 15th in the 1,600-meter run. He was 25th overall.
In hepthalon action, Fairview’s Alexus Lindsey placed third overall in a close javelin event and finished the competition in 23rd.
