Fairview qualified its second golf team and an individual for sub-state on Tuesday, but the biggest local story on the links belonged to West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers.
The junior started slow — she was 8-over on the front nine — but picked up her level of play down the stretch to fire a 1-over and seize low-medalist honors for Class 4A-5A, Section 4 at Twin Pines Country Club in Colbert County.
“She kept her composure and came on strong,” West Point coach Jimmy Harbison said.
Fairview’s boys finished fourth in the 5A, Section 4 Tournament Tuesday on the same course to secure a berth in next Monday’s Sub-State, North 4 qualifier at Sylacauga Country Club.
Rodgers will try to punch her ticket to state next Tuesday in the Sub-State, North 2 Tournament, again at Twin Pines Golf Course.
The Aggies earned a total score of 328 Tuesday, placing them behind Guntersville (308), host Russellville (309) and Lawrence County (327).
Trey Hanvey (75), James Arnold (81), Hunter Whitehead (84) and Hunter McKelvy (88) contributed to Fairview’s solid, if not, spectacular day in a field of 11 programs.
“We scored well enough to advance, but it wasn’t the best rounds we can put together,” coach Kurt Knight said. “It’ll definitely take our best next week to advance at Sylacauga.”
Fairview’s Austin Scott (81) made the individual cutoff with the third-best round not counting toward team scores.
The Lady Aggies jumpstarted a fruitful two-day stretch for the program by placing third in their sectional Monday at Chesley Oaks.
Class 1A-3A, Section 2 Tournament
Hanceville’s girls placed fourth during Tuesday’s sectional action at Cullman Golf Course following a team score of 346.
Winfield (248), Altamont (296) and Holy Spirit (305) grabbed the first three berths to next Monday’s Sub-State, South 1 event at Montgomery County Club.
Briana Morgan (108), Ivey Box (112), and Mattellan Rusk and Lexi Cooper (126) carded the Lady Bulldogs’ clinching rounds.
