CULLMAN COUNTY GOLF TOURNAMENT: Hanvey, Mullican claim individual titles, guide Fairview to championship sweep

Trey Hanvey didn’t let a weeklong break nor a five-stroke lead affect his thinking entering Wednesday’s final round of the Cullman County Golf Tournament at Cullman Golf Course.

Following a 1-under 70 at Chesley Oaks on April 15, the senior delivered an even better performance a week later, shooting a 4-under 68 to claim an individual title and propel the Aggies to a team championship against a trio of other county schools.

While heavy rain pushed the conclusion back, Hanvey said “golf is golf, no matter when you play it.”

“It’s still a round,” he continued. “The weather was a little better, too, so I’d say the delay wasn’t that bad. I still had to come out here and shoot a nice score that I know how to shoot. I’m pleased that I won, that’s for sure.”

Added coach Kurt Knight: “We all knew he had it in him. He’s done big things before, and we felt like he’d come out here and do it today. We are real proud of him.”

Hunter McKelvy (81), James Arnold (82) and Seth Lancaster (85) carded solid rounds of their own to help the Purple and Gold to a total team score of 316 (620 overall), which was 184 shots better than Good Hope (806).

It was the first county crown for Knight’s group since 2007.

West Point (829) and Hanceville (924) finished in third and fourth, respectively.

Fairview’s Hanvey (70-68, 138), Lancaster (75-85, 160), McKelvy (80-81, 161), Hunter Whitehead (79-87, 166) and James Arnold (84-82, 166) were all named to the All-Tournament Team, while Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust (85-85, 170) and Good Hope’s Cole Pearson (79-91, 170) also notched spots on the honorary squad.

“It’s nice to win as a team,” Hanvey said. “Now it’s time to work on the stuff I need to work on for sectionals and sub-state. I feel good about how I’m playing and how the team’s playing. I hope we can take it far.”

The Lady Aggies’ Dalys Mullican, meanwhile, was rolling along with a seven-stroke cushion as she headed to the 13th tee.

However, when she and West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers made the walk to the final hole, the junior found her comfortable lead cut to just one.

Matching pars did just enough to ease the nerves.

“I had a bad hole and then I got all antsy,” she said. “I really thought we were tied on 18. Every shot she took, I tried to match. We were both really shaking (laughs). When I found out I’d won, it was awesome because I’ve only been playing for two years. I didn’t think I could do it, but somehow, I managed to pull it off. Lindsey was tough.”

Rodgers (82) bested Mullican (85) on Wednesday, but the latter entered the final day with a four-stroke advantage.

Mullican (85-85, 170), Maci Yeager (91-90, 181), Aladie Howse (106-97, 203) and Ana Dahlke (97-106, 203) helped the Lady Aggies nab their fifth straight county title, downing Hanceville 545 to 749.

All four Purple and Gold ladies, plus Rodgers (89-82, 171), garnered All-Tournant Team spots.

Austin Scott (90-78, 168), Alex Walters (88-90, 178), Noah Walker (93, 90-183) and Cannon Twilly (101-101, 202) easily collected the crown for the junior varsity division.

All in all, it was a banner day for Fairview golf.

“We’re real proud of everyone,” Knight said. “We’re trying to push our programs as much as we can. Everybody’s working hard, we’ve got great parents and we are just all looking to the future.”
