PREP SPORTS: Rain pushes playoff series for Cullman, Hanceville back to Friday; County golf tourney rescheduled for next Wednesday

Muddy conditions at Cold Springs' softball field caused a delay in the county tournament earlier this week, as well as postponements for the start of the baseball playoffs for Cullman and Hanceville.

So much for Cullman’s and Hanceville’s attempts to beat the rain.

Mother Nature spurned both baseball teams yet again with a steady string of showers Thursday, forcing the programs to push their first-round playoff series to their originally scheduled times on Friday.

If the weather cooperates — which it’s been reluctant to do this spring — the Class 6A No. 1 Bearcats (35-9) will welcome Athens to Bill Shelton Field for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. An if-necessary Game 3 would be Saturday at 4 p.m.

Friday’s twinbill will serve as the Black and Gold’s Senior Night.

Hanceville (21-6), which came in at sixth in 3A of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s final baseball rankings of the season, will try to host Winston County for two games beginning at 4:30 p.m. The series tiebreaker would be Saturday at noon.

Addison’s tilts at Section are still on for Friday starting at 4 p.m. A do-or-die third game would be Saturday at noon. The Bulldogs are 8-8. Section is 7-15.
