The Class 6A No. 1 Bearcats followed the lead of a few other hosts around the state, pushing their first-round series to Thursday to try and avoid Friday’s expected showers. That means the Black and Gold will now welcome Athens to Bill Shelton Field for a doubleheader Thursday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Weather permitting, an if-necessary Game 3 would be Friday at 5 p.m.

As of Thursday night, coach Michael Chandler said Hanceville is keeping its postseason opener on Friday. The 3A No. 5 Bulldogs are currently slated to host Winston County at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Their tiebreaker would be Saturday at noon.

% Cullman 4, Lee-Huntsville 1: Four different girls had goals, and the Lady Bearcats wrapped up home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs with their first section title since 2005.

Ninfa Moreno was good for a goal and an assist, while Kaitlin Cook, Abby Branham and Leah Shaddix each recorded a goal apiece.

The fifth-ranked Black and Gold improved to 16-2. They’ve won six games in a row, which ties a school record.

% St. Bernard 4, Fairview 2: The Saints took a 3-0 lead less than a minute into the second half and withstood a furious Aggie rally to win a local mud match Tuesday at Dafford Smith Stadium.

Abbie Mescher and Isabella Cline put St. Bernard up 2-0 at half, and Aimme Cortes made it 3-0 with the quick score after the break. Ashley Latham cut into Fairview’s deficit with a pair of goals, but the Saints responded with Cortes’ cleanup of a Von Pham corner kick that had bounced off the crossbar.

St. Bernard’s boys also beat the Aggies, riding a hat trick from Alex Anderson and two-goal game from seventh-grader Anthony Diaz to a 5-1 win.

The Lady Saints shut out J.B. Pennington 5-0 last Friday. Cortes collected a hat trick, and Ayleana Mami and Cline each scored once.
