Baseball roundup: Mortimer Jordan wins its own spring break tourney; Pinson Valley sweeps Gulf Coast Classic

While many of their classmates were enjoying spring break at the beach last week, Mortimer Jordan’s baseball team was basking in its own glow.
The Blue Devils marched through their annual Spring Break Tournament, winning the championship game 9-6 over Corner on Thursday.
Tenth-ranked Jordan (26-9) had to come from behind for the win. Down 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two out and the bases loaded, Brandon Couch put his team ahead for good with a double that cleared the sacks.
The Devils added an insurance run when Nathan Stover’s hit scored Walker McCleney.
In a game where the long tournament took its toll on pitching staffs, Hunter Cornelius got his 10th win of the season with four innings of relief. He held the Yellow Jackets scoreless, giving up just four hits and one walk.
Corner (25-12) had taken the lead with the bases juiced in the top of the fourth, when Jake Crew was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run.
Chris Huff smacked a two-run double for the Jackets, and Dylan Burgett’s hit also brought home two runs for Jordan.
Blaine Kilgore took the loss on the mound for Corner.
Corner 7, John Carroll Catholic 0: In a semifinal game, Jackson Tavel recorded seven strikeouts in six innings, as he and reliever Chris Huff held the Cavaliers to just one hit.
Cole Lepchitz put the Jackets on the board with an RBI double in the first, and Robby Harpman singled home Huff in the fourth.
Brennan Pugh got the Cavs’ lone hit.
Mortimer Jordan 8, Pleasant Grove 1: In the other semifinal, Taylor Goodwin went the distance on the mound, as the Devils avenged a loss to the Spartans in round-robin play.
Goodwin struck out seven while yielding five hits, to get his fourth win of the season.
Goodwin was also 2-for-2 at the plate, with a double and two RBIs. Stover was 2-for-4 on a pair of doubles, also driving in two runs.
Caleb Webb drove in the lone run for Pleasant Grove.

Indians sweep in Gulf Shores: Pinson Valley made a big six-win run through the Gulf Coast Classic III Tournament in Gulf Shores, beating Hueytown 3-1 in the championship game on Thursday.
Starter Blake Sisson gave up five hits in five innings’ work for the Indians, and was 2-for-3 in hitting with a double. Hunter Davidson worked two innings’ relief for the save.
In the semifinals, took down No. 8 (4A) Haleyville 10-7. Russ Mauldin drove in three runs, as the Indians scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the quarterfinals, the Tribe needed an RBI single from Sisson to take a 2-1 win over Westbrook Christian in eight innings. Jody Graves drove in a run on a first-inning hit.
Raul Tafoya got the win in relief, pitching ta hitless seventh and eighth innings.
Pinson also beat Good Hope 22-0 in pool play, and got a 9-0 win over Haleyville on a one-hitter thrown by Brett Jordan.
The Indians opened with an 8-3 win over Lawrence County.
Fultondale 4, B.B. Comer 2: The Wildcats have made the playoffs for the fifth straight season with the win Friday.
The Wildcat pitchers combined to hold Comer to just two hits, with Bradley Matthews getting the win in four innings. Comer’s Tanner Cleveland struck out 13 Cats batters, but got stuck with the loss.
Freeman went 2-for-3 at the plate, and gave Fultondale the winning margin with a two-run single in the third inning.
Gardendale 14, Tallassee 8: Adam Hulsey struck out eight in 62⁄3 innings, and John Michael Mathews was 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs in a game Wednesday, breaking a four-game losing streak for the Rockets.
Brady Sellers drove in two runs with a single and a double, and Jacob Hallmark had a two-run hit.
Sellers came in to pitch for the last out.
