Kilpatrick said it appeared Payton, who was wearing a seat belt, was headed southbound on Alabama 157 when he lost control of his vehicle and ran across the median into oncoming traffic. Payton’s vehicle hit the SUV headed northbound, causing the tractor trailer to overturn.

Cullman police are investigating the fatal wreck, and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and Alabama State Troopers were also on the scene to assist. Cullman Fire Rescue and Cullman EMS also responded.
