% Good Hope 8, J.B. Pennington 4: The Lady Raiders’ 4-0 hole with no outs and a Tiger runner on third in the top of the first inning made for one heckuva comeback in Friday’s area showdown.

“It wasn’t the best start to a game,” coach Wayne Harris said. “Don’t know if it was the typical teenage bad afternoon, bad night or what, but they worked out of the jam.”

MaKailey Speegle opened the Good Hope charge with an early solo shot on the first pitch she saw.

Jami Stinson sparked the game-tying frame with a single to open the fourth and stole her way around the bases before scoring on a wild pitch. Skylar Tucker doubled in Speegle and was later plated on a sacrifice fly by Bailey Starnes, knotting the contest at 4-4.

The Raiders tacked on the go-ahead pair in the fifth. Josie McDonald kicked off the inning with a triple and was driven in by Woodall. Stinson again single and scored, this time on a knock by Speegle.

McDonald stole the show in the seventh, following a Darby Randolph double with a two-run bomb to the trees past the right field fence.

“It was probably the furthest home run I’ve seen out there,” Harris said.

McDonald also picked up the win in the circle, scattering two walks, five hits and a season-high eight strikeouts over all seven innings.

The Raiders, who improved to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in area play, are slated to play four games at a tournament Saturday at Carbon Hill.
