PREP ROUNDUP: Cold Springs baseball ekes by Addison 7-5 in area series tiebreaker

Cold Springs scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for dear life to wrap up an area series triumph with a 7-5 over neighboring Addison on Wednesday.

Cody Anderson (double and two RBIs) and Tyler Rice (RBI) kept their bats hot with matching 3-for-4 performances for the Eagles. Mason Abbott (RBI), Jakob Ryer (RBI), Zac Ellison, Austin Moore, Blake Harbison and Josh Freeman sported singles. Levi Harris knocked in two runs, and Christian Crandall swiped a base.

Harbison nabbed the W with five K’s, a walk, three runs (none earned) and three hits in a 5 2/3-inning start. Austin Garmon recorded the save with a punchout, three walks and two earned runs in 1 1/3 frames of no-hit relief.

Stephen Bryson led Addison with a hit and two RBIs. Jackson Seymore and Kyle Denson had singles, Eli Seymore had an RBI and John Everett scored a run. Denson fanned four in a six-inning start.

% Lawrence County 10, West Point 9 (12 innings): Bryant Farley forced extra innings with a two-out RBI triple and drove in another run — again with two outs — to extend the marathon past 10 innings, but the visiting Red Devils wound up outlasting the Warriors in Wednesday’s area bout.

West Point countered Lawrence County’s two-run output in the 12th with only a single score, one frame after again using a bit of two-out magic to erase an 8-6 deficit.

Stats for the Warriors were unknown.


Prep Softball

% Cullman 8, Pleasant Valley 0: McKensi Burks hit a two-run homer in the top of the first, and Olivia Schwaiger and Sierra Easterwood combined for a five-inning shutout to open tourney play at the Gulf Coast Classic II on Wednesday.

Burks, Claire Jenkins (double and RBI), Taiya Ponder and Sierra Easterwood each had two hits. Hannah Morton (double), Kylie Witcher (RBI) and Schwaiger were good for one apiece. Elli Dixon drove in a run, and Kaitlynn Brannon crossed home plate once.

% Alabama Christian 4, Cullman 1: The Class 6A No. 9 Lady Bearcats later capped off a strong showing at the beach with a six-inning loss to the fourth-ranked squad in 5A.

Morton had two hits and Cullman’s lone RBI. Easterwood, Jenkins and Tiffani Schwaiger had singles.

Olivia Schwaiger fanned four and yielded seven hits and two earned run in five innings.

% Lawrence County 7, West Point 2: The Warriors rapped eight hits but left too many runners on base, dropping to 6-5 following an area defeat Wednesday at home.

Mallory Walker whacked a double and a single, Jeri Beasley boasted a pair of singles, and Daranna Campbell (RBI), Mallory Walker (run), Karra Elam (run), Jordan Kimbrell and Kayla Sullins had a hit apiece. Katie Elkins drove in a run.
