PREP ROUNDUP: Hanvey, Aggies earn crown at Hanceville Invitational; Collins hits 8th HR in Cullman comeback

Fairview’s boys golf team finished in first place in Tuesday’s Hanceville Invitational at Cullman Golf Course.

Trey Hanvey fired a 5-under 67 to help the Aggies to a fine score of 312, good for the top spot by 30 strokes over runner-up Decatur Heritage.

James Arnold (80), Hunter Whitehead (81) and Hunter McKelvy (85) all pitched in quality rounds to supplement Hanvey’s tournament-best score.

The Purple and Gold senior started with a birdie and came up with two more on his final four holes.

Ever the golfer, Hanvey critiqued his day shortly after it ended.

“To be honest, it was an on-and-off round for me,” he said. “I probably lipped out three or four more birdie chances. But overall, I’m happy with how I played. I’m starting to finish out my rounds a little better now, and that’s a big thing for me. Hopefully this will be the start of a good run.”

Good Hope’s Cole Pearson (78), Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust (89), West Point’s Jesse Ude (96) and Hanceville’s Zach Hudson (105) were the best scores for other local participating squads.

Meanwhile, Fairview’s B unit placed third overall after scores by Austin Scott (80), Noah Walker and Alex Waters (91), and Cannon Twilley (103).

“We had a good day with all our groups,” Aggie coach Kurt Knight said.

Northridge took the girls crown with an exquisite 247 team score, while Fairview’s ladies came in second following a 300.

Maci Yeager (96), Dalys Mullican (99) and Anna Dahlke (105) collected the hardware for the Aggies.

West Point’s Lindsey Rodgers (84) fired the second-best round among a scatter of girls. Northridge’s Ryan MacVicor took the top honor with a 75.


Prep Baseball

Cullman picked up their ninth and 10th straight victories, respectively, during a Tuesday sweep against area-rival Decatur.

The Class 6A No. 1 Bearcats (21-3) won the first game 8-6 before putting together a comeback effort in the nightcap to collect a 13-7 triumph.

Kolby Robinson collected three hits, including a two-run home run — his first of the season — in the fourth inning of the opener.

Sam Huser (double) and Carter Bowen (single) each had RBI hits, and Maison Goodwin added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Noah Fondren (two), Goodwin and Levi Thomas also came away with base knocks.

The Bearcats led 8-0 before allowing six runs in the last Decatur frame.

Jesse Scott earned the victory, striking our seven batters in six scoreless innings.

In the second tilt, Cole Collins smashed his eighth homer of the season with a three-run shot in the fifth inning to give his team some cushion.

Owen Lovell added three RBI singles. Wheeler Easterman also secured an RBI hit. He, Collins, Robinson, Bowen and Fondren notched two hits apiece for the Black and Gold.

Branch Hill pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save. Goodwin notched the win with six strikeouts and two hits allowed in 3 1/3 innings.

Cullman remained in the top 25 in the latest Baseball America rankings at 23rd. The ‘Cats started the season at No. 18 and were 20th in the second installment.

% Cold Springs 9, Addison 2: Josh Freeman struck out 11 in seven one-hit innings, and Tyler Rice went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to lift the Eagles in the second game of an area doubleheader on Tuesday.

Freeman (double) and Jakob Ryer (RBI) both went 2 for 3 for Cold Springs. Cody Anderson (triple) led a parade of players with one hit that also includes Zac Ellison (RBI), Austin Moore (RBI) and Mason Abbott.

Jackson Seymore had Addison’s lone hit. Zack Anders score both of the Bulldogs’ runs. Matthew Mann fanned seven and gave up three hits and one earned run in three innings of relief.

% Addison 5, Cold Springs 4: Peyton Thompson (double and two RBIs), Kyle Denson (RBI), Anders and Stephen Bryson all had two hits in a tight area triumph for the Bulldogs Tuesday.

John Everett and Ryan Walker each added a hit and an RBI to the win.

Anders struck out seven in a complete game victory.

Moore went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Cold Springs. Blake Harbison drive in two runs of his own with a two-base knock. Levi Harris and Abbott also had hits.

Rice spread six K’s over six innings in the loss.

% Lawrence County 5, West Point 1: Bryant Farley’s run-scoring single was the lone bright spot for the Warriors, who dropped an area matchup against the Tigers on Tuesday.

Game 2 will be played at West Point Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Prep Softball

% West Point 8, Arab 5: Daranna Campbell came up huge with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Warriors to a stellar comeback victory on Tuesday.

Trailing 5-4 entering the frame, Jeri Beasley opened the action with a double before Karli Beck following with an RBI double of her own to tie the game. Campbell’s dinger over the left center field fence came shortly after a Karra Elam walk to improve the Maroon and White’s record to 6-4 on the season.

Campbell finished with four hits and four RBIs, while Mallory Walker notched a pair of hits and RBIs. Beasley, Elam and Jordan Kimbrell each walloped two base knocks.

Beck started the game for West Point — her first in three weeks due to injury — giving up four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Beasley tallied the win in relief with 2 1/3 clean frames.

% Fairview 3, J.B. Pennington 1: Kalynn Holcombe followed a late bases-loaded walk with a two-run single to help the Lady Aggies take the cake in a defensive struggle on Tuesday.

“That’s a scrappy bunch right there, I tell you what,” Fairview coach said of the Tigers. “But I thought we were scrappy, too.”

Jada Golden had half of the Aggies’ four hits, Kayla Aleman added one and Jordan Moore brought in a run.

Carli Jo Ashley collected the win with four K’s and two hits allowed in a complete game effort.

Fairview is 9-4.

% Cold Springs 11, Vinemont 2: Kelsey Hester did a little of everything, while Taylor Payne launched a three-run homer in the third inning of the Blue and Gold’s easy win over the Eagles on Tuesday.

Hester allowed four hits and struck out eight batters on the mound and added two hits and three RBIs at the plate.

Savanna Taylor (two hits), Rilee White, Bailey West and Crimson Gann (one hit) and Hannah Wilson (RBI) also contributed for Cold Springs (4-3-2).

Stats for Vinemont were unknown.

% Good Hope 5, Locust Fork 4: The Raiders scored three big runs in the seventh inning to steal an area win away from the Hornets on Tuesday.

Good Hope (3-5, 2-1 area) loaded the bases in the decisive frame, scoring one run on a hit by pitch before Josie McDonald delivered the final hit with a walk-off single that scored MaKailey Speegle and Skylar Tucker.

Speegle had two hits, while Bailey Starnes collected one.

McDonald surrendered seven hits, walked three and K’d three in the win.

% Cullman 4, Grissom 2: Despite just two hits, the Bearcats eked past the Tigers for a win in Tuesday’s Gulf Coast Classic II.

Hannah Morton and Taiya Ponder collected the pair of base knocks for the 6A No. 9 Black and Gold (12-4), which won in a five-inning tilt.

Olivia Schwaiger gave up three hits and struck out four to move to 9-1 this season, while Sierra Easterwood was good for an RBI.

% Westminster Christian 1, Cullman 0: The Bearcats saw their sublime seven-game winning streak come to a close with a difficult loss to the 4A No. 5 Warriors.

Schwaiger secured the lone hit for her team, while Claire Jenkins gave up just one earned run over 4 2/3 innings.

Cullman completed pool play 3-1. Tourney play is set to start Wednesday.


Prep Soccer

% Cullman 6, Fort Payne 3: The Bearcat boys received goals from Peyton Brown, Miguel Tizapa and Ben Walker in a road loss to the top-ranked squad in 6A on Tuesday.

Tizapa and Yusuke Shimizu dished out assists. Walker was credited with an own goal by the Wildcats.

K.J. Potter had 11 saves in the net for No. 5 Cullman, which dropped to 8-4.


Prep Fishing

Three local tandems qualified for state on the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation High School trail last Saturday on Lake Tuscaloosa.

Cullman’s Jake Smith and Kody Kite bagged 9.45 pounds to finish seventh out of 115 boats. Vinemont’s Eli Chambers and Hunter Herfurth were 43rd with 6.82 pounds. Cullman’s Cameron Glasscock and Lawson Graves were closed behind in 46th with 6.49 pounds.

The state championship will be May 22-23 on Lake Eufala.


Prep Tennis

Cullman’s boys and girls picked up their second sweep in as many days, blanking Fort Payne in a make-up section match on Tuesday.

Singles winners for the boys were Matt Davis (10-0), Parker Adams (10-0), Jacob Lambert (10-3), Hunter Manley (10-0), Drew Fillinger (10-5) and Austin Mullins (10-0). Doubles winners were Davis/Donny Camp (10-0), Adams/Manley (10-1) and Lambert Fillinger (10-3).

Singles winners for the girls were Olivia Sharpton (10-1), Lillie Watson (10-2), Kacie Donaldson (10-0), Kate Hood (10-0), Gentry Bussman (10-4) and Emily Graves (10-1). Doubles winners were Sharpton/Watson (10-0), Hood/Donaldson (10-4) and Graves/Emily Mullins (10-3).
