LOCAL ROUNDUP: Lady Warriors overpower Cold Springs; Cullman softball starts 2-0 at Gulf Coast Classic

WEST POINT — The Lady Warriors continued to establish themselves as the county softball team to beat for the second season in a row, topping Cold Springs 11-1 in six innings Monday at home.

West Point had a ton of offensive contributors, but none was bigger than Bailee Yearwood, who capped off a two-hit, four-RBI performance with the mercy-inducing three-run triple.

Mallory Walker (two RBIs) and Katie Elkins (RBI) also had a triple and two hits for the Warriors, while Daranna Campbell and Jeri Beasley sported doubles. Campbell and Karra Elam (RBI) had two hits apiece. Karli Beck (RBI), Beasley and Tess Hembree each had one.

Beasley notched the win with six strikeouts, three hits and a walk in a complete game effort.

Bailey West drove in Cold Springs’ lone run. Rilee White clubbed a double.

% Cullman 4, East Limestone 0: Tiffani Schwaiger hit an early solo shot and picked up another RBI an inning later to help the Lady Bearcats open the Gulf Coast Classic II with a victory Monday in Gulf Shores.

Hannah Morton plated Elli Dixon with a double in the top of the first. Dixon, McKensi Burk and Kaitlyn Brannon each chipped in singles. Morton, Claire Jenkins and Tori Lynn stole a base apiece.

Olivia Schwaiger, who accounted for the other RBI, tossed the four-inning shutout, fanning four and yielding just two hits.

% Cullman 5, Lincoln 2: Back-to-back blasts by Jenkins (two-run) and Morton allowed the Class 6A No. 9 Black and Gold girls to erase a 2-1, third-inning deficit and cement a 2-0 tourney start Monday at the beach.

Jenkins, who now has four home runs, and Brannon (RBI) both went 2 for 2. Sierra Easterwood added a single, and Riley Miles, Taiya Ponder and Burks each scored a run.

Olivia Schwaiger tallied her second win in the circle, scattering a strikeout, three hits, two walks and one earned run in 3 1/3 innings. She’s 8-1 in 11 apperances.

Cullman is 11-4 with six straight wins.


Prep Soccer

Cullman’s record-breaking girls maintained their No. 4 spot in EurosportScoreboard.com’s weekly rankings released Sunday, while the Bearcat boys held firm at fifth.

The Black and Gold girls, 13-2 and winners of nine of their last 10, also came in at 15th in the website’s state power rankings, which disregards classifications.

Cullman’s boys (8-3) and girls hold the same positions in the Alabama High School Coaches’ Poll.


Wallace State baseball

The Lions split a doubleheader at Calhoun over the weekend, finishing their conference-opening series by taking three of four games from the Warhawks.

Wallace State prevailed 11-1 in Saturday’s opening game and fell 10-0 in five innings in the series finale.

The Lions (15-6, 3-1 Alabama Community College Conference) opened the four-game set with a sweep last Thursday at home, winning 3-2 in extra innings and 4-1 in a seven-inning contest at James C. Bailey Stadium.

In Saturday’s victory, freshman Ryan Goodman finished with a pair of singles and three RBIs, Lance Cleveland had two RBIs and Turner Vincent cranked his first homer of the season, a solo shot. 

Luke Porter (3-0) was the winning pitcher.

The Lions scored two runs in the first inning and broke it open with a six-run seventh. They added two more runs in the ninth.

Wallace State hosts Lawson State in a Thursday doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.


Wallace State softball

The 14th-ranked Lady Lions won two of three games in the ACCC Crossover Tournament last Friday in Montgomery.

Wallace State (33-10, 4-0 ACCC) earned a 6-1 victory over Alabama Southern and defeated Lurleen B. Wallace 14-1 in five innings before losing to Chattahoochee Valley 1-0 in its tournament finale.

Amanda Medders (16-2) continued her stellar sophomore season for the Lady Lions. She was the winning pitcher in both games, allowing only one run on five hits in eight innings. Medders, the ACCC wins leader, went five frames against Alabama Southern and three innings versus L.B. Wallace.  

Rachel Ragland notched her fifth save in the Alabama Southern victory, working two perfect innings. She was also productive at the plate, hitting her first homer of the spring.

Wallace State sophomore second baseman Mackenzie Hill was 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and a run against Alabama Southern, Sarah Jordan had a pair of singles and scored a run, and Sam Riley finished 2 for 3. Olivia Royals went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and a run, Andrea McKenzie was 1 for 2 with a run and Katie Parr contributed an RBI single.

In the blowout over L.B. Wallace, Jordan finished with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, Mackenzie was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run, Royals was 2 for 3 with a run and a stolen base, and Molli Garcia had a two-run single.

Other contributors for Wallace State were Medders (two RBIs), Riley (RBI single), Julia Dailey (double and two runs) and Parr (double). Jennifer Gonzalez and Erin Benson each added RBIs for the Lady Lions, and Morgan Cantrell and Leisha Yamauchi each scored a run.

Ragland (11-6) was the tough-luck loser in the loss to Chattahoochee Valley, which snapped Wallace State’s 11-game winning streak. She went the distance and yielded one run on six hits, striking out seven.

Jordan, Riley and Royals each had a single for Wallace State in the loss. Royals swiped two bags to bump her conference lead to 28 stolen bases.

Wallace State steps back into conference play Tuesday as the Lady Lions travel to Snead State for a doubleheader.
