The Gardendale Police Department has identified the suspects in the Thursday robbery of a Gardendale business.
Benjamin Alan Henderson and Kayla Michelle Wood are being held on charges of robbery first degree and narcotics trafficking. Their ages and cities of residence were not released.
Gardendale Police patrol units responded to a robbery in progress at about 9 a.m. Thursday at American Family Care on Odum Road.
“Upon arrival, our units were told that a black male suspect walked into American Family Care and presented a handwritten note that instructed the victim to give him all of the cough syrup, a controlled substance, that they had in the pharmacy,” said Detective Brad Cotton. “The note also threatened the victim by saying he had a gun and if he didn’t hurry up, he would shoot him.”
Cotton said the victim did as he was instructed.
The suspect then fled the scene in a small red passenger vehicle occupied by two other suspects.
Gardendale patrol units and detectives began to search the city for the suspects’ car.
A detective spotted the vehicle speeding south on U.S. Hwy. 31. Because he was in an unmarked car, the detective was able to follow the suspects until marked patrol cars arrived, according to Cotton.
In Fultondale, one of the suspects reportedly jumped out of the car tried to run from police. Following a brief foot chase across U.S. Hwy. 31, officers caught the suspect in front of the Shell gas station.
The other suspects continued driving south until they were caught at the Raceway gas station in Fultondale, according to Cotton.
Henderson and Wood are being held on bonds totaling $105,000.
A third subject was taken into custody and released pending further investigation.
