A Hayden man, working in a construction job for a Georgia company, was shot and killed Tuesday in broad daylight outside a supermarket in Atlanta — in a neighborhood so rife with crime that locals call the store “Murder Kroger.”

Joshua Richey, 38, was working at the Kroger supermarket on Ponce de Leon Avenue in northeast Atlanta. Police told The Atlanta-Journal Constitution newspaper that Richey and a co-worker saw a man sitting inside Richey’s extended-cab pickup truck when they came out of the store.

The co-worker, Jason Shelton, told police that Richey slapped on the truck window to get the intruder’s attention. That’s when the man in the truck drew a gun and shot Richey through the window. The shooter then ran into a waiting black BMW car and sped away.

Atlanta Police told the AJC that the incident was a “crime of opportunity,” an apparent attempt to steal Richey’s truck. A store surveillance video shows two men pulling up in a black car beside the truck, then driving away after the incident.

Richey died later Tuesday at a nearby hospital.

Shelton said that Richey was the father of four children, and that both worked for RG Construction of Covington, Ga. The pickup truck belonged to the company.

The store earned the nickname “Murder Kroger” after a customer was shot and killed just outside the entrance in 1991. That murder has never been solved, according to a report by television station WXIA-11.

Local funeral arrangements for Richey are incomplete.
