- Fairview's Luke Jones approaches the finish line during a race at Saturday's Cullman Invitational.
More than 1,000 athletes from 31 teams made the Cullman Invitational an all-day affair on an extremely sunny Saturday at Oliver Woodard Stadium.
St. Bernard’s girls stuck it out at the site of this year’s Class 1A-3A state meet and took home the small-school (1A-3A) title. Cullman’s girls were the large-school (4A-7A) runners-up, as were Cold Springs’ boys (2A) on the small-school side. Cullman’s boys and Holly Pond’s girls (3A) were third.
Vinemont’s (3A) and Holly Pond’s boys tied for fourth, the same standing as Cold Springs’ girls. St. Bernard’s boys (1A) were eighth. Class 5A Fairview was eighth (girls) and 12th (boys), respectively. Vinemont’s girls were 11th.
James Clemens (7A) swept the large-school crowns. Falkville (2A) won the small-school boys title.
Kyle Norris led a contingent of five local athletes to walk away victorious in at least one event. The Cullman senior did so in two, sweeping the 1,600- (4:40) and 3,200-meter (9:55) runs. Norris won the latter by more than 30 seconds and also had a hand in top-three finishes in the 4×400- and 4×800-meter relays.
Fellow Bearcat Garrison Hill overcame a lengthy wait to take the top spot in the pole vault. The sophomore’s clearance of 13’6” was a full foot higher than the next-best challenger.
Savanna Canter and Kelsey Wren repped Cullman’s girls with respective triumphs in the 300-meter hurdles (50.75) and high jump (5 feet). Canter nearly snagged another win with second in the 100-meter hurdles. Wren was also fourth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.
Holly Pond’s Mykenzie Heaton rounded out the local victors with a leap of 16’9” in the long jump. The junior also sped to seventh in the 200-meter dash.
Unlike team standings, individual results weren’t split up based on classification.
