PREP BASKETBALL: Cullman’s Schaffer, Johnson selected for Alabama-Mississippi All-Star games

Cullman’s Lawson Schaffer was one of 12 players picked to represent Alabama for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Boys Basketball Game.

Twenty-four of the state’s best seniors have been selected to compete in the 25th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Basketball games.

Two are from Cullman High.

Lawson Schaffer and Baylee Johnson both made the cut when Alabama’s roster was released Thursday by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The games will be March 20 at Alabama State University’s Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Girls will tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 7 p.m.

Schaffer has already had quite the offseason since Cullman’s dream campaign came to an end in the Northwest Regional Tournament final. The crafty point guard shared the Birmingham Tip-Off Club Boys Player of the Year award with Theodore’s Dazon Ingram, recently received his first Division-I offer from Furman, and is expected to complete his tour of in-state visits to Alabama and Auburn by the weekend.

The attention is deserved considering Schaffer’s spectacular winter showing. He averaged around 21 points, seven rebounds and eight assists — not to mention a coverage-area high 114 total steals — to wrap up his career just shy of 2,000 points.

“Any gathering of the state’s best basketball players would include Lawson Schaffer,” Cullman boys coach Bobby Meyer said. “College coaches that are passing on Lawson for their team are going to get a chance to see his incredible floor leadership and ability to make his teammates excel.”

Johnson missed the first five games of the Lady Bearcats’ season recovering from an ACL tear … and was still more productive than the average prep player available for a full slate. Not even six months removed from surgery, Johnson debuted with 15 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists.

The amount of time the 3-point threat was on the floor? Less than 10 minutes.

Johnson, a UAH signee, closed out the winter with 515 points (21.5 a game) and almost five assists a night to go along with 78 steals.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” Cullman girls coach Jonathan Hayes said. “It’s definitely an honor and something she’s very excited about. Anything she gets is well deserved. She’s put in the work, the time, the effort.”

Hayes was quick to recall Johnson and Schaffer were surprisingly excluded from last year’s North-South All-Star Week.

“I hate that she missed out on that opportunity last year, but it makes this opportunity a little more sweet,” he said. “Her senior year. Coming back from an injury. That’s something that’s been a goal for her. I’m very happy for her.”

The boys team, which won 90-83 in 2014 and leads the series 13-11, will be coached by Charles Burkett (Hoover), Obadiah Threadgill (LaFayette) and Jamie Lee (Decatur).

Schaffer is joined on the boys roster by Ingram, Camron Reedus (Austin), Gerron Scissum (Lee-Huntsville), Brandon Austin (Carver-Montgomery), Donta’ Hall (Luverne), Ethan Stair (Hazel Green), Hasan Abdullah (Clay-Chalkville), Anthony Moore (Central-Phenix City), Malik Cook-Stroup (Homewood), and Tommy Burton Jr. and Trenton Clayton (Lee-Montgomery).

The girls team, which lost 95-89 a year ago and is even with Mississippi at 12-12, will be coached by Donnie Roberts (Red Bay), LaKenya Knight (Jeff Davis) and Brenda Mayes (Muscle Shoals).

Johnson is joined on the girls roster by Shaquera Wade and Ta’Naisha Hill (Huntsville), Jada Smith (Hoover), Amahni Upshaw (Brantley), Salina Virola (Lee-Huntsville), Kimberly Parrish (Center Point), Kristian Hudson (Clay-Chalkville), Kendrea Dawkins (Sparkman), Areleatha Gipson (Lee-Montgomery), and Rayven Pearson and Chloe Long (Hazel Green).
