PREP BASEBALL: County tourney rescheduled for April 13-15

- This year's Cullman County Baseball Tournament has been put on hold until April 13-15. It will still be at Fairview.
After three delays, rain, sleet, ice, snow and barely any sun in between, the Cullman County Baseball Tournament has been rescheduled for April.
According to first-year Fairview coach Brandon Tidmore, this year’s tourney will now be April 13-15, the Monday through Wednesday before the start of the playoffs. He said several county squads were already slated to meet on those days and the ones who weren’t were willing to readjust their schedules.
Pushing the tournament to a more ideal date range allows the format to remain double elimination and teams to have more than two weeks under their belts before competing for a county championship. Switching the format to single elimination and playing it to completion on Saturday as briefly considered would’ve essentially wasted a tourney — teams are only afforded two a season — for squads knocked out in the first round.
As for cons, the baseball bonanza now conflicts with the Cullman County Track and Field Championships (April 13), two of the three scheduled days for the Cullman County Varsity Softball Tournament (April 13, 14 and 16) and the first round of the Cullman County Golf Tournament (April 15 and 16).
The baseball tournament will still be hosted by Fairview. Whether the championship can still be played at Wallace State is unknown. The Lions don’t have any games scheduled — home or away — on the newly selected days.
Though the tourney will no longer be held on Saturday, all of the county’s coaches have made plans to play.
Tidmore and the Aggies, who’ve yet to hit the field competitively, will welcome Brewer, Falkville, West Morgan and Danville for a round robin starting at 11 a.m. Good Hope and Decatur Heritage will head to Hanceville, and West Point was already set to travel south to Briarwood Christian.
Holly Pond, meanwhile, is expected to finally open its season Saturday at St. Bernard. The Saints will host the Broncos and Jefferson Christian.
Cold Springs will travel to Victory Christian Saturday morning. They’ll be joined by Vincent.
