Update: Jefferson County Schools change plans, close schools on Thursday

Jefferson County Schools officials have had a change of heart and mind, and have decided to close schools on Thursday after all.

JefCoEd had originally announced planned to delay classes by two hours, and were the only school system in metro Birmingham that did not cancel classes in advance of the approaching ice storm. But a check on weather reports and road conditions early Thursday morning prompted the change, a district spokeswoman said.

All other local systems are closed today, including Blount County, Birmingham and Tarrant schools.

After Wednesday’s balmy temperatures reaching into the upper 70s, temperatures have fallen rapidly with the approaching cold front and are in the middle 30s as of 5:45 a.m. The freezing rain is expected to hit north Jefferson County around 7 a.m.
