Baseball roundup: Gardendale, Mortimer Jordan and Corner sweep in JefCoEd Tournament

Pool play got underway Saturday in the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament, and three local teams came away with a pair of wins each.
Gardendale 2, Pinson Valley 1: In Pool A play at Gardendale, Adam Hulsey struck out nine Indians batters while allowing six hits, as he went all seven innings for the victory.
John Michael Mathews and Brady Sellers each drove in a run for the Rockets (8-1), while Jacob Box smacked a run-scoring double to put Pinson ahead in the second inning.
Hunter Davidson took the loss for the Tribe, despite fanning six Gardendale batters and yielding just two hits over five innings.
Gardendale 10, McAdory 5: In the day’s second game, Jacob Hallmark did much of the work from both the mound and the plate for the Rockets.
As the starting pitcher, Hallmark went six innings and struck out 10 Yellow Jacket hitters, while giving up just four hits, one run and one walk. With his bat, Hallmark drove in four runs as he went 3-for-4.
Andy McDuffee brought home thee runs on a pair of doubles, while Reagan Padgett was 2-for-3 and scored three times.
McAdory’s only real damage came in the seventh inning, as they scored four runs off reliever Dylan Oliver in a third of an inning off four walks. Sellers came in to finish off McAdory.
Tony Pollet was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles, and Hunter Marcum took the loss in the mound for the Jackets, giving up six runs in four innings.
Mortimer Jordan 6, Minor 2: In Pool C play at Jordan, Taylor Goodwin’s bases-loaded double in the second inning was the big hit for the Blue Devils.
Nathan Stover also had a run-scoring base hit in the second, and Levi Faucett was 2-for-2 and scored twice.
Hunter Cornelius picked up his fourth win of the season, going four innings and striking out four while allowing two hits and one run. Dyan Burgett was credited with a three-inning save.
Davres Davis had an RBT sibgle for the Tigers. Tyler Smith gave up five runs in 2-2/3 innings for the loss.
Mortimer Jordan 10, Oak Grove 1: It took a while for the bats to warm up in the second game, as only one run crossed the plate in the first four innings. But the Devils got things cranked up with five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Walker McCleney was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored. Pitcher Nathan Stover helped his own cause by driving in two runs, one on a double in the fifth, and scoring two as well. Catcher Brandon Couch also went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
Stover worked 4-1/3 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and a walk. Reliever Taylor Goodwin picked up the win, striking out five with no hits and one walk in 2-2/3 innings.
Bronson Myers had a double and a base on balls for the Tigers. Starting pitcher Austin Lawrence got the loss in four innings’ work.
Corner 8, Clay-Chalkville 0: In Pool B play at Corner, Jake Crew’s two-run line drive single to center field drove home two runs as the Yellow Jackets cruised to an easy shutout win over the Cougars.
Cole Lepchitz was 3-for-4 and drove hone a run, and Chris Huff reached base on an RBI single and two walks, and scored twice for Corner.
Chase Best went all seven innings on the mound, striking out five and allowing three hits plus a walk.
Jeremy Rhodes was 2-for-2 for Clay, and Matthew Calvert got the loss in five innings of pitching.
Corner 10, Center Point 0 (6 innings): The Jackets scored eight runs in the first two innings and ended the game early on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Coach Josh Hoyle emptied the bench, with 18 players stepping up to the plate. Braylon Brakefield was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, one on a double in the second inning. Chris Huff also smashed a line-drive hit to center field that scored two runs.
Devne Daniel worked a hitless two innings, striking out three Eagles. Blake Kilgore worked four innings and struck out 10 batters, giving up two hits and a walk.
Corner is scheduled to travel to Pinson Valley on Monday in cross-pool play, weather permitting.
Tuesday’s semifinals are set, with Gardendale hosting Mortimer Jordan and Corner hosting Pleasant Grove. The winners will play in the championship game on Thursday, with the losers in the third-place game that day as well. Pinson Valley hosts Oak Grove in a fifth-place bracket game on Tuesday. (All of these schedules are contingent on weather, with a very unfavorable forecast for both days.)
Regular season
Shades Mountain Christian 8, Fultondale 4: In a Saturday tri-series at Shades Mountain, the Wildcats led 4-1 in the second inning, but errors proved costly.
Bradeley Matthews’ big hit in the second inning put the Cats ahead. He and Austin Alexander pitched well, but in the words of coach Mike Gillespie, “they pitched well enough to win, but once again we had too many errors.”
The Wildcats lost 20-0 to Vincent in the second game. “We could nt throw strikes, and when we did, they either hit it or we couldn’t hem it up,” Gillespie said.
Gardendale 7-10, Clay-Chalkville 1-2: Coach Pat Keedy sent a pair of sophomores to the mound Friday evening, and both came away with complete-game victories.
In the opener, Drew Love struck our seven Cougars in a one-hitter to record his first win of the season. He walked three batters and hit one with a pitch; the lone run was unearned.
John Michael Mathews was 3-for-3 with a triple, driving in three runners; he also crossed the plate twice. Brady Sellers had a triple and a double in three plate appearances, with two RBIs.
Chandler Parker got the lone hit and scored the only run for Clay. Colton Friday took the complete-game loss.
In the nightcap, pitcher Seth Rogers fanned 14 batters while allowing two runs on three hits and a hit-by-pitch.
Mathews had three RBIs as he went 1-for-3; he also reached base on an error. Steven Crowder, Blake Zumbado and Dylan Oliver all drove in a run each, with Zumbado’s coming in on a double for the Rockets (6-1).
Andrew Blount had a run-scoring hit for the Cougars.
