BATON ROUGE, La. — A Louisiana teen was arrested Thursday afternoon after beating a school bus driver unconscious while the bus was still moving.
According to reports, the 15-year-old student, who attends the area’s Christa McAuliff Superintendent’s Academy, engaged in a verbal spat with the 26-year-old bus driver as she attempted to reprimand the student before the physical altercation began around 3 p.m.
“The student punched the bus driver several times in the face until she was knocked unconscious,” Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said in a news release. “Another student stopped the bus prior to it crashing.”
According to McKneely, the other students on the bus said the student sneakily attacked the unsuspecting driver without warning.
Following the incident, the student left the parked bus and ran away before police arrived. Shortly after, the bus driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The suspect’s mother later took him to the police department, where he was arrested, McKneely told WAFB.
The teen was booked into juvenile detention, charged with battery of a bus operator, aggravated obstruction of a roadway, and second-degree battery.
A representative for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System told WAFB that the student was immediately suspended and has been recommended for expulsion from the alternative school for students with disciplinary histories he was attending.
