PREP BASEBALL: County tourney up in air after Saturday’s slate called off

- First-year Vinemont coach Jason Veres tries to stay warm during Tuesday's home and season opener against Cold Springs.
The 2015 Cullman County Baseball Tournament will not begin on Saturday.
With snow still blanketing baseball fields across the area and northern part of the state — and the threat of rain every day next week — it’s becoming harder and harder to tell when it actually will.
The county’s seven coaches are set to meet Saturday morning to determine how to proceed with this year’s tourney, which was originally scheduled to start Saturday at Fairview and wrap up the following Friday at Wallace State’s James C. Bailey Stadium.
Solutions tossed around include playing at different venues and one other zany idea: Could we be in for the first-ever Cullman County Wiffle Ball Tournament?
In short, no.
But considering winter weather has kept his and two other county squads from playing a single game so far, first-year Fairview coach Brandon Tidmore would take it over continuing to sit stir crazy in wait.
Tidmore said the Aggies spent the last two days shoveling snow off the field in hopes of still opening the tourney Saturday. In the end, however, he said the playing surface was just too wet.
“It’s been the craziest start to the season I’ve ever seen,” Tidmore said. “It’s just been wild.”
