UPDATED: Jefferson County Schools dismissing at 1 p.m., Blount County Schools out at 12:30 because of winter weather

The threat of winter weather today is becoming more prominent, and because of that Jefferson County Schools have decided to dismiss classes at 1 p.m., and Blount County Schools will dismiss classes at 12:30.

Parents of JefCoEd students may pick their children up at school before 1 p.m. if they wish. All after-school activities, including sports contests, have been cancelled.

The National Weather Service has also extended the winter weather advisory that was scheduled to expire at noon. It will now stay in effect until 6 p.m.

At 11:30 a.m., Doppler radar showed precipitation moving into west Blount and north Jefferson counties, with more developing in Walker County and moving eastward. This precipitation may take the form of freezing rain, sleet, light snow or rain, and with temperatures remaining below freezing, some icy travel conditions may occur in central Alabama.

At noon, very light snow was falling in the Gardendale area.

Update, 12:55 p.m.: The Gardendale Public Library has closed for the day, and the Pinson Public Library will close at 1 p.m.
