- Pinson Valley midfielder Tori Gann chases down the ball, with Mortimer Jordan's ______ in pursuit, in the Indians' 5-1 victory over Jordan on Thursday. Gann scored a hat trick and assisted on a fourth goal, in the very first match for the Blue Devils' new soccer program.
Mortimer Jordan has joined the ranks of soccer-playing high schools, as the Blue Devils’ first-ever varsity boys and girls teams took to the pitch at Pinson Valley last Thursday.
And while the results were as one-sided as might be expected when a brand new side takes on one with a good deal of experience and competitive success, it was at least a start.
The record will reflect that the Devils recorded their very first goal in the 30th minute, as junior Peyton Luker broke away to tie the girls’ match at 1-1.
Alas, it would also be the only goal that Jordan scored, at least for themselves; the boys were on the wrong end of two goals.
The Indians prevailed on the scoreboard in both matches. Midfielder Tori Gann chalked up her second hat trick of the season as Pinson Valley won 5-1.
Gann also assisted a goal by Viviana Rosales in the 32nd minute, and Evelyn Zotea converted a spot kick for the Tribe (2-0) when the Devils were whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area.
Jordan wasn’t as fortunate in the boys’ match, as they were whitewashed 10-0 in 59 minutes under the mercy rule.
Hector Lucatero scored five goals, and Jordan Walton also scored a hat trick for his first goal of the new season, as the Indians (1-0-1) got their first win of the campaign.
Jordan coach Donnie Gooch’s game plan was to stack the back-line defense and hope for the best — even if that meant a lopsided loss. But even getting to the very first game has been a long time coming.
“It’s been a solid four to six years of trying to get this thing going,” Gooch said. “But it took a changeover in administration [at Jordan] to really make it happen. [Principal Craig] Canaday made it happen. He invited soccer, and it’s been on from the day he said ‘go.’”
