Mortimer Jordan’s legacy in the AHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships has not been particularly spectacular over the years.

But Jacob Dean may be changing that.

Dean won the first gold medal for a Blue Devil athlete in the meet’s history, as he won the Class 4A-5A triple jump Saturday in the state meet at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Dean won with a distance of 12.7 meters, or 41 feet, 8 inches — just two inches clear of runner-up Zackery Charmichael of St. James’ Episcopal.

Dean also earned team points for Jordan in the long jump, where he placed eighth. His effort accounted for all of the Devils’ 11 points, good enough for 14th place overall.

On the girls’ side, Tyrah Mines just missed a medal finish in the triple jump, placing fifth with a jump of 9.73 meters (31 feet, 11 1/4 inches). Sarah Hale qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, where she placed eighth.

Corner’s Sam Pinson took sixth place in the girls’ shot put, and the 4-by-800m relay team placed seventh in the finals. For the boys, the Yellow Jackets’ Jon Bassett was sixth in the shot put.
