PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Saints, Warriors secure area tourney titles

St. Bernard coach Greg Boatright doesn’t care if it’s the NBA, college or high school basketball. When a player steps to the free-throw line with his team down one with four seconds to go and proceeds to drain both attempts for the win, that’s just “super clutch.”

“Clutch” was the perfect descriptor Saturday night for Gavin Harris, who played the hero at the charity stripe and sent the Saints to a 27-26 thriller over Lynn.

The Class 1A, Area 11 Tournament championship — the program’s first this century — assured St. Bernard another home game in next Tuesday’s sub-regional round.

“We got the win,” Boatright said. “It wasn’t easy, but we got it. My boys did what we worked on, and it was a close one down to the end.”

Evan Aldridge led the Saints offensively with 14 points. Harris’ late free throws bumped his total to eight, and Christian Peterson came up with five.

“To say the least, I’m proud of this bunch because they’ve worked,” Boatright said. “They’ve come a long way. They’re a good group to coach.”

St. Bernard will host Decatur Heritage Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a trip to the Northwest Regional Tournament at stake.

“I know for a fact we will have to have a good game,” Boatright said. “It’s a big game for us, but we do get to play at home. That’s very important.”

% West Point 63, Lawrence County 44: Ryder Jones helped move the Warriors one step closer to Wallace State with a sky-high double-double (24 points and 14 rebounds) Saturday at home.

Tanner Rusk chipped in 12 points, and Will Wrenn recorded 11 points and eight boards to ensure West Point’s several seniors one final go-round on their home court.

The Warriors began to pull away with a 14-8 second quarter and put the nail in the Red Devils’ coffin with a 21-10 fourth frame. Their lockdown D on Lawrence County’s wealth of shooters — Jesse Childress was the only one in double digits with 11 points — was what truly allowed the Maroon and White to waltz away with a second decisive win over their area rival in a two-week span.

“They came out with a lot of intensity on defense and held them to 44 points,” West Point coach Randy Jones said. “We shut down their two main guys pretty good. What gave us the ballgame was our defense.”

Other contributors for the Warriors, who notched their 20th win, were Bryant Farley, eight points; Levi Laney, six; and Kobe Smith, two.

West Point (20-10) will duke it out with St. John Paul Catholic II Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Coach Jones sees no better way for his senior-laden squad to say farewell to the gymnasium they’ve known for so long than by punching their ticket to the Northwest Regional Tournament.

“I think they’ll lay it on the line Tuesday night,” he said.
