Cullman’s Savanna Canter, right, clears a hurdle at Friday’s state meet. The junior reset her school record in the 60-meter event with a time of 9.81.

BIRMINGHAM — Ann Carol Braswell pole vaulted her way to the podium, and Savanna Canter hurdled past her own school record, highlighting Cullman High’s — and The Times’ coverage area’s — first day at the state indoor track and field meet.

Braswell was the only local trackster to escape the Birmingham CrossPlex with a medal on Friday. The sophomore snagged silver after clearing the bar at 8 feet. Pelham’s Alex Ladewig won with a 9-foot vault.

“She’s one of those that has such high expectations for herself. She was standing second on the podium and very disappointed actually,” Cullman coach Trent Dean said of Braswell. “That speaks to her work ethic. We were very proud of her. Just to go out there and get eight points for the team is tremendous.”

Canter cruised through the 60-meter hurdles in 9.81 to advance to Saturday’s final and edge the school record she’d set as a sophomore by a tenth of a second. The junior finished Friday’s race seventh. The top eight from each preliminary moved on.

Senior Olivia Kontogeorge rounded out the Lady Bearcats’ day with a sixth-place showing in the triple jump. Her contribution boosted the team’s point total to 11, which pulled Cullman even with Opelika for fifth.

The Black and Gold boys enter the second and final day tied for seventh following respective fourth- and fifth-place runs from Walker Caretti (800 meter) and Kyle Norris (3,200 meter). Norris was also 13th in the 800 meter.

Cold Springs’ boys sit in eighth in their division behind fourth- and fifth-place runners of their own. Jared Stanley and Kramer Crider claimed the spots in the 3,200-meter run, while Crider later corralled 14th in the 800-meter run.

Holly Pond’s and St. Bernard’s boys were 10th and 12th.

The Broncos took fifth in the 4×200 boys relay. Runners were unknown. Todd Schwab was 10th in the 60-meter dash prelims.

The Saints’ Steven Mami was seventh in the 3,200-meter run. Marco Tona was ninth in the 800-meter run.

Fairview’s Alexus Lindsdey tied for fifth in the pole vault and grabbed another top-10 result with ninth in the 60-meter hurdle prelims.

Leahrose Mami (3,200 meter) and Jaden Edge (800 meter) represented St. Bernard’s girls with 10th-place runs.

Divisions were tweaked this year to accommodate the addition of Class 7A. Schools are now grouped as follows: 1A-3A (Cold Springs, St. Bernard and Holly Pond), 4A-5A (Fairview), 6A (Cullman) and 7A.

Day 2 will begin at 8 a.m., with team champs being crowned once all events are concluded.

Other local results from Friday included Cullman’s Marisa Franklin, 11th in girls 800-meter run; Cullman’s Tucker Franey, 15th in 3,200-meter run; Holly Pond’s Jacob Drane, 16th in 3,200-meter run; Cold Springs’ C.J. Lang, 16th in 800-meter run; Cullman’s Anna Franklin, 16th in girls 60-meter hurdle prelims; Cold Springs’ Abi Burrow, 19th in girls 800-meter run; Holly Pond’s Colton Teeling, 21st in 800-meter run; Fairview’s Kelsi Davis, 23rd in girls 800-meter run; Fairview’s Tiffany Lodge, 28th in girls 800-meter run; and Fairview’s Luke Macias, 42nd in 60-meter dash prelims.
