PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cold Springs sets up rematch vs. Tanner; Aggies, Bearcats bounce 1st-round foes

Cold Springs' Keegan Johnson gets off a 3-point attempt just before a pair of Addison players fly in Wednesday at Jesse George Gymnasium.

COLD SPRINGS — Tammy West is reaching her tipping point.

The coach’s Cold Springs girls did win Wednesday against Addison but didn’t always look pretty doing it, overcoming rebounding issues, free-throw woes and streaky shooting to take their Class 2A, Area 14 Tournament opener 55-33 at Jesse George Gymnasium.

The top-seeded and third-ranked Lady Eagles (24-6) automatically qualified for sub-regionals and advanced to Friday’s tourney title game. Still, West was none too pleased. A less-than-stellar 7-of-16 line at the charity stripe only began to scratch the surface of why.

“Can’t get them to do the fundamental things,” she said. “If they don’t want to box out, I can’t make them. The turnovers have got to stop. The easy shots have got to be made. The free throws have got to be worked on.

“It’s in their hands right now.”

Caitlyn Hall led a quartet of Cold Springs players in double digits with 15 points. Fellow senior Keegan Johnson came through with three treys and 13 points, while sophomore Emme Willoughby was good for 11 points. Bailey West sank a late 3 to boost her total to 10 points.

Camryn Crider corralled all five of her points in the third quarter, and Hannah Watson made a free throw.

Kendra Tyree paced Addison with nine points. Jessy Taylor tossed in seven.

Other contributors for the Bulldogs were Callie Brewer, six points; Sadie Brock, four; Macy Lake, three; and Jessica Benton and Allie Townsend, two apiece.

West expects the Eagles to be motivated for Friday’s rematch with Tanner, the very team that clawed back from a 19-point second-half deficit to edge Cold Springs just last month. The second-seeded and fourth-ranked Rattlers earned their spot in the championship with a 57-31 victory versus Falkville Wednesday.

“They’re very (motivated), but they can’t just wish it to happen and go out there and then it happen,” West said. “You’ve got to perform.”

The final is set for 7 p.m. Both teams advance no matter what but would much rather host than travel when regional berths are handed out next Monday.

“I know they are capable of a lot more things,” West said. “Hopefully we’ll play better Friday night. We have to.”

Added Johnson, “We need to host sub-regionals.”

% Fairview 52, Russellville 47: The Lady Aggies won’t ever see Ashley Dunstan again — and that’s just fine by them.

Fairview withstood a 38-point onslaught from the Golden Tiger senior and threw seeding by the wayside Wednesday, slipping past the hosts for the first time this season to advance to the 5A, Area 14 Tournament title tilt.

The win secured the program’s first sub-regional berth since 2000.

“It’s pretty awesome,” coach Mary Hartline said. “The girls were pumped. I’m still pumped. I’m very proud of them. Our season can be summed up with this game. Up and down. We’ve had good moments and bad moments. Luckily, we’ve been better lately when we’ve needed to be.”

Although her group did yield a big number to “a great player” in Dunstan, Hartline’s girls allowed just one other field goal to the rest of the Russellville squad.

“We knew she’d have a big game,” the coach said. “We just tried to shut down everybody else on their team. It worked out. I’m glad she’s going off to Montevallo.”

Taylor Ann Yeager and Jada Golden helped the Aggies tally the statement victory — and clinch a sub-regional berth along the way — with 19 and 16 points, respectively. Other contributors were Lizzie Garrison, 10 points; Kayla Aleman, four; Abbi Taylor, two; and Ashley Latham, one.

The Purple and Gold will take on third-seeded Lawrence County at 7 p.m. Friday at Russellville. They defeated the Red Devils 35-34 the last time the two met but fell 54-42 at home in December.

% Cullman 55, Hartselle 44: For the fifth straight season, coach Jonathan Hayes and the Bearcats are bound for sub-regionals.

Baylee Johnson scored 29 points, Christina Skinner tossed in 13 and the Black and Gold pulled away from the Tigers in the fourth quarter for a double-digit victory in the opening round of the 6A, Area 15 Tournament on Wednesday.

“Our girls stayed positive early and started knocking down some shots late,” Hayes said. “They had won eight in a row coming in, including their county tournament. Coach Orr had them peaking. You could see it in their faces after the game that we kind of stole this one from them. Credit to the girls, though. I’m ecstatic.”

Johnson collected four steals and three assists, Skinner notched five rebounds and a steal, and Oakleigh White was good for two points, five rebounds and four steals. Sierra Easterwood and Madison Cobbs (four points apiece) and Anna Evans (three points) rounded out Cullman’s contributors.

The steals, along with on-the-ball defense, had Hayes tickled pink following the outcome.

“We knew they’d shoot a lot of 3’s,” he said. “We concentrated on playing the pass and the kick. We tipped the ball a lot and contested nearly all their shots. I couldn’t be happier with our defensive effort. The girls were phenomenal.”

The Bearcats will take on top-seeded and second-ranked Austin in the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

% Oneonta 49, Good Hope 32: Try as they might, the Raiders couldn’t find enough offense to get by the two-time defending 4A champions in Wednesday’s Area 10 Tournament semifinal.

After trailing just 16-10 at halftime, Good Hope was outscored 33-22 by the No. 5 Redskins in the final two quarters to end the season 11-17.

Kaylee Maddox paced the Raiders with 11 points. Other contributors were Celest Whisenant (seven points), Kate Kent and Sadie Abbott (four each), and Micah Oldacre, Jami Stinson and Kelly Pickett (two apiece.)

% Lawrence County 46, West Point 22: The Warriors’ season came to a close following a tough loss to the Red Devils.

Jeri Beasley and Tanner Quick led West Point with eight points apiece.

% Brilliant 58, St. Bernard 45: The Saints led by as many as six points late in the first half but couldn’t stave off the top-seeded Tigers in Tuesday’s 1A, Area 11 Tournament semifinal.

Zana Wilson (16 points) and Abbie Mescher (10) paced St. Bernard with double-digit showcases, while Jaden Edge (eight), Alli Messick (five) and Avy Whaley (four) also contributed.

Brilliant took advantage of the Saints’ lack of depth, outscoring the road team 33-24 in the final two quarters to pull away for the win.

St. Bernard finished its season at 9-14.
