JefCoEd Basketball Tournament: Fultondale boys, Mortimer Jordan girls win small-school titles

Fultondale had an easy trip through the Jefferson County Schools Small Schools Boys Basketball Tournament last week, rolling over Oak Grove in the finals by a 48-19 score at Corner last Friday night.
Derick Houston led the way for the Wildcats with 12 points, nearly all scored before halftime. Bronson Myers paced the Tigers with 10.
The Tigers moved to 14-4 after a loss Monday night to third-ranked Midfield. They close out regular-season play Monday night at Tarrant.
Fultondale 59, Corner 50: Down by as many as six points late in the fourth quarter, Fultondale mounted a frenetic 13-0 run in the last two minutes of the first-round game.
Houston finished with 16 points to lead the visitors, with 10 of those scored in the last four minutes of the game. He was a perfect 8-of-8 at the foul line, with six of those in the Cats’ late run.
Chase Best led the Jackets with 11 points. Dillon McCaleb scored nine and grabbed nine rebounds.
Oak Grove 66, Mortimer Jordan 52: Davis Hardin exploded for 30 for the Tigers in the first-round game.
Hardin hit seven 3-point shots, four of them in the first quarter alone where he scored 15 points. The Tigers sank 11 treys as a team.
Trey Peters caught fire late for Jordan, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter and 20 for the game to lead the Devils. Four of his baskets were from beyond the 3-point arc.
GIRLS
Finals — Mortimer Jordan 60, Corner 33: Kaylan Hines led the way for the Blue Devils in the championship game Friday, scoring 15 points.
Nicole Goldsmith added 10 points for Jordan (14-8).
Madison Purvis led all scorers with 16 points for the Yellow Jackets (5-14).
LARGE SCHOOLS
Girls — No. 3 Clay-Chalkville 50, Gardendale 36: At Hueytown, Joy Sadler led all scorers with 17 points for the Rockets in their semifinal loss. Kristian Hudson led the Cougars with 12 points.
Boys — Minor 66, Gardendale 57: At Minor, the Tigers came back from a 5-point deficit to start the fourth quarter in their first-round win. Austin Hicks scored 21 points and Juan Jackson 12 for the Rockets.
