- West Point's Bryant Farley, Will Wrenn and Levi Laney make life tough on Good Hope's Tyler Elrod in Tuesday's 54-25 win for the Warriors.
West Point’s boys became the third local basketball team to win a coin toss in the last week, edging Lawrence County Monday to earn hosting rights for the Class 5A, Area 14 Tournament.
The Warriors forced the flip by handily avenging an earlier season loss to the Red Devils Friday on the road. Their lone area blemish was a 73-70 home defeat to Lawrence County in early December.
Both teams finished 5-1 in area play. West Point will open the first round against Russellville. County-rival Fairview matches up with the Red Devils.
The third-seeded Warriors enter this week’s county tournament 16-9 overall. West Point will play sixth-seeded Hanceville Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
Cold Springs’ girls and St. Bernard’s boys are the other squads in the The Times’ coverage to win their coin tosses. Cold Springs’ boys and both Holly Pond teams clinched regular season area titles outright.
Cullman will have the chance to force its own coin flip in a highly anticipated rematch against Austin Tuesday at home. A victory for the fourth-ranked Bearcats versus the 6A No. 2 Black Bears would even the area standings at 5-1.
Austin defended its home-court in an 82-76 shootout in mid-December.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s default dates for area tournaments are Feb. 4 and 6 for girls and Feb. 5 and 7 for boys. However, tourney games can technically be played any time between Jan. 31-Feb. 6 for girls and Jan. 31-Feb. 7 for boys.
The Times will publish area tournament schedules and sites for every local team once all brackets are cemented.
