CULLMAN COUNTY TOURNEY (Varsity Girls): Cold Springs shoots way to 59-20 victory over Vinemont in 1st game without Davis

HANCEVILLE — Cold Springs resembled a pretty typical Tammy West team during Monday’s clash versus Vinemont in the Cullman County Basketball Tournament — even if the Eagles were missing one of their hardest-working players.

The second-seeded Blue and Gold made it rain from the perimeter, stayed active on defense and decisively took down the No. 7 Red and White 59-20 inside Tom Drake Coliseum to move on to the semifinals.

It was the first game for Cold Springs without senior starter McKinnley Davis, who tore her right ACL and meniscus during a win against Good Hope last Friday night.

West was understandably emotional following the triumph.

“She’s a senior and a leader,” she said. “If I told her she could run through a wall, she’d believe me and try her best to do it. Everyone’s going to have to work just a little harder for the rest of the year. McKinnley’s got a big heart and she’s going to be tough to replace.”

Added Davis: “It was really tough not being out there, but I’m just going to try and support my team. It’s an honor for me to sit there and be a Tammy West Jr. on the bench for us. I don’t want them to fold because of this. I want them to be strong and continue toward our goals. I’ll do whatever I can to help that.”

Both Davis and West had a front-row seat for Cold Springs’ hot shooting, as Bailey West collected a game-high 22 points on a 6-of-8 clip from 3-point land. Keegan Johnson, Emme Willoughby and Destiny Campbell also cashed checks from behind the arc en route to the blowout win.

It was, without question, a welcome sight for the longtime coach.

“I was really pleased with how we shot because we haven’t done that well at all lately,” she said. “Every time they’ve been shooting I think they’ve been thinking they are going to miss. Hopefully, this will give us some confidence.”

The coach’s daughter made three straight treys in the first quarter and added another in the second stanza to allow the Class 2A No. 3 Blue and Gold (21-5) to notch a commanding 35-11 halftime lead.

“It helped that all of us came out and hit some shots,” Bailey West added. “That’s just so important for us confidence wise. We know we’ve all got to step up for our teammate McKinnley. It’s going to be tough trying to fill her shoes.”

The second half was more of the same for Cold Springs — run its offense, make a few shots and play strong defense until the clock reached triple zero.

Joining West in the scoring ledger was Caitlyn Hall and Willoughby, nine points apiece; Johnson, eight; Camryn Crider, six; Campbell, three; and Rilee White, two.

The Blue and Gold will take on Tuesday’s winner between No. 3 Fairview and No. 6 Hanceville Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in Saturday’s championship.

With another game comes another chance for the team — not an individual — to step up and assume Davis’ key role.

“Rebounding was her thing and let me tell you, she loved it,” West said. “I don’t expect one person to get those eight to 10 boards she got us a game. We’ve just got to have one person get an extra one every game out. Hopefully, we can step it up and do just that.”

Anna Hughes and Casey Westmoreland each tossed in four points for Vinemont, while Hannah Etheredge and MyKenzie Lamb both collected three. Zoe Thomas, Sarah Smith and Kelsey Rodgers rounded out the scoring with a bucket apiece.
