- West Point's David Doss (32), Drew Jenkins (1), Michael Keller (10) and Brady Kent (3) prepare to spell four-fifths of the Warriors' starters during the second quarter of Saturday's 58-20 win over Vinemont.
HANCEVILLE — West Point’s junior varsity boys closed out the opening day of the 2015 Cullman County Basketball Tournament with a bang, breezing by Vinemont 58-20 Saturday night at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
The second-seeded Warriors, who eased to a 20-1 lead after the first quarter and 35-3 advantage by halftime, received double-digit efforts from three different players. Alex Hernandez led the way with 15 points, Seth Parker was a menace down low with 11 points and three early blocks, and Brandon Farley bobbed and weaved for 10 points.
Other West Point contributors were Michael Keller, seven points; Drew Jenkins and Brady Kent, both five; Matthew Daniel, three; and Cameron Moore.
Coach Scott Brown was content with his squad’s energetic start and said the opener provided a welcomed opportunity to get the players reacclimated to running the expansive junior college floor.
“It was a good team effort,” he said. “I thought everybody gave me what I needed out of them.”
Up next for the Warriors is a semifinal showdown with third-seeded Cold Springs Tuesday at 5 p.m. West Point defended its home-court in its only matchup against the Eagles and now needs to take care of business in a neutral environment to punch its ticket to the championship game, a more than familiar setting for this year’s batch of Warriors.
“They’ve been there,” Brown said. “But it’s a new year, new team. We’re looking forward to it. We’ll go home and start getting ready for them. Cold Springs has a good team. Coach (Adam McKinnon) does a good job with them.”
Seth Campbell drained a 3-pointer for Vinemont’s first field goal with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter and went on to finish with a solid 13-point showing. Zac Thomas knocked down a trey of his own, and Corbin Barnett and Matt Stewart each accounted for two points.
