It’s Friday at last…
Weather: Snow! We’re not joking. We could see some light snow overnight tonight, but not enough to cause any travel problems – just enough to perhaps turn grassy areas white for a little while. As for today, rain continues with a high in the upper 40s. Tonight the rain turns to light snow after midnight, with lows right at the freezing mark. Saturday will see the clouds gradually move out, with highs near 50 and nighttime lows in the middle 30s. Sunny on Sunday with highs in the upper 50s. Next week looks rain-free, with highs each day near 50.
Down for the count. The long battle between the owner of the tornado-damaged Home Field Sports Grill and the city of Fultondale is over. The building was torn down on Wednesday, after owner John Douglas gave up on appealing a Jefferson County Circuit Court decision to throw his lawsuit out against the city. Douglas had fought the city over whether the restaurant and sports bar, which suffered heavy damage in the 2011 tornado, was damaged more than 50 percent and therefore subject to current building codes. The building was originally built before Fultondale had such codes, and Douglas considered it was grandfathered under the lack of codes because the building was damaged less than 50 percent. Douglas also ran unsuccessfully against Mayor Jim Lowery in the 2012 elections.
Sports: A champion is crowned. Actually there’s two, as the JefCoEd Small Schools Basketball Tournament wraps up tonight at Corner High. Mortimer Jordan takes on Corner in the girls finals at 6;30 p.m., while Fultondale plays Oak Grove in the boys championship game to follow… Wrestling: The annual Mortimer Jordan Invitational Tournament gets under way this evening and continues until Saturday afternoon. It’s the last big wrestling event locally before the AHSAA Super Sectionals, which take place the first weekend of February at the Birmingham Crossplex.
