If you have children attending Jefferson County Schools next year, they’re going to get a nice, long break from classes at Thanksgiving. But that’s nothing compared with what they will get over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

The system’s board of education approved the calendar for the 2015-16 school year at their regular meeting Thursday night. The new calendar gives students the entire week of Thanksgiving off, which means they will have no classes on Nov. 23-27.

But three weeks after that, students are dismissed on Friday, Dec.18 — and won’t be back until Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The winter break officially is scheduled to have its last day on Wednesday, Jan. 6, but the next two days and the following Monday are designated as professional development days — teachers and staff will work, but no classes for students. And schools will be closed on the Monday after that for Martin Luther King Day as well.

There’s also a four-day weekend in February, with a professional development day on Friday, Feb. 12 followed by Presidents’ Day the following Monday.

Classes begin this year on Thursday, Aug. 6, and the last day of classes will be on Friday, May 27 if there are no days where schools are shut down for weather. If there are, May 31 is designated as a make-up day.

The calendar chosen was one of two presented as options by JefCoEd. A committee of staffers, teachers and parents developed the schedule; additionally, an online survey solicited input from more than 2,000 responders.
