Murder case that goes to Wisconsin and back. A stolen car driven by a Hayden man and an accomplice in Wisconsin has led to the arrest of another Hayden man in the murder of a missing man from Holly Pond. Christopher “Biggun” Jones was arrested Tuesday for the murder of David Hayes, who had been missing since Christmas. The break in the case came when police in Kenosha, Wis. arrested two people — one of whom was Matthew Thrasher of Hayden — when he was riding in a car stolen from the victim. Investigators found traces of human blood in the car, and Thrasher (along with Stephanie Underwood of Cullman) then told police that Jones killed the victim at Jones’ home north of Hayden. Jones is jailed on $500,000, while Thrasher and Underwood are charged with first-degree theft of property so far, with more charges possible. They are awaiting extradition from Wisconsin back to Blount County.
Sports: The world is coming. The 2021 World Games have been awarded to the city of Birmingham. The announcement came overnight, as Birmingham beat Lima, Peru and Ufa, Russia for the right to host the event. The World Games are structured much like the Olympics; it consists of 40 sports that generally are not on the Olympic program such as lacrosse, softball, racquetball, bowling and karate. The event is expected to bring about 4,500 athletes from 100 countries. The cost of the games to Birmingham will be about $75 million, but organizers say the economic impact will be more than three times that amount.
