Cold Springs' Emme Willoughby drives to the basket while coach Tammy West shouts instructions during Friday's area game against Tanner. Willoughby finished with a game-high 21 points.

Tammy West won a coin toss with Tanner girls coach Larry Green Wednesday, ensuring the entire Class 2A, Area 14 Basketball Tournament will be hosted by Cold Springs.

West, a three-time state champion who’s been at her post 23 years, couldn’t quite remember if she’d ever won a flip with Green. She’s had her fair share of chances.

More than anything, the worry-prone coach was happy to get the ordeal out of the way.

“It was stressful,” West said. “I’m glad it’s over.”

The second-ranked Lady Eagles and No. 5 Rattlers were sent to the tiebreaker after splitting their regular season series to sport matching 5-1 records in area play. Cold Springs boys already snagged hosting rights with a spotless 6-0 mark.

Holly Pond’s boys and girls wrapped up regular season area titles Tuesday. Cullman’s boys still have a shot to force a coin toss, as do both West Point squads. St. Bernard’s boys are fated for a flip after breaking even with Meek at 5-1.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s default dates for area tournaments are Feb. 4 and 6 for girls and Feb. 5 and 7 for boys. However, the window for tourneys is technically Jan. 31-Feb. 6 for girls and Jan. 31-Feb. 7 for boys.
