- Mortimer Jordan's Gavin Rogers (in blue) struggles to take down River Farley (in black) of Pinson Valley, during a 145-lb. first-round match at the Jefferson County Schools Wrestling Tournament in Gardendale on Friday. Rogers won the bout, but the Indians won their fourth consecutive championship.
Chalk up yet another Jefferson County Schools Wrestling Championship to Pinson Valley.
The Indians won their fourth straight county title on Saturday, beating out host Gardendale by 22½ points. Mortimer Jordan placed third.
Pinson Valley won gold medals in four different weight classes. Hank Turner at 152 pounds and Jonathan Duke at 220, both of whom were Class 5A state champs last year, won their weights with pins. Cameron Hamby (120 lbs.) won over the Blue Devils’ Cason Jordan in a 6-3 decision, and Deon Gregory won at 170 with a 12-4 major decision over Tyler Chatman of Clay-Chalkville.
Andrew Freeman (195), Scotty Clements (145) and Mac Boackle (106) won their weights for Gardendale. Greg Abramson of Jordan took gold at 182 by pinning Fultondale’s Zach Clifton, while Timothy Murphree (113) won for the Wildcats.
Assuming things stay on schedule, the JefCoEd tournament was the last for Gardendale, which will break away from the county schools to form their own system next academic year.
