TANNER — Cold Springs’ varsity boys team finally shook that 1,000-pound monkey off its back.
Josh Freeman tallied 30 points, Triston Chambers tossed in 17 and the Class 2A No. 4 Eagles outlasted No. 6 Tanner 63-59 on the road to climb to 15-4 on the season and 4-0 in area play.
“It’s big for us,” said coach Tim Willoughby, whose squad was ousted by the Rattlers in last year’s Northwest Regional Tournament. “Right before we started, I told them they couldn’t win anything or lose anything today, but they could take a step forward. We’ve been talking about Tanner ever since last February. It was a great game. The players played so hard. They didn’t go down without a fight.”
Cold Springs led by just five entering the fourth quarter, when Tanner’s Jonathan Fletcher — who finished with 30 himself — took over and gave his team a second wind with 13 early points in the frame.
After awhile, Willoughby had seen enough. The coach called a timeout and switched to a box-and-one defense — putting Chambers on the main scoring culprit.
Eureka.
“This is as good a game as Triston Chambers has ever played for me,” Willoughby said. “Tanner is all about pressure. He handled that so well. That Fletcher kid just went off on us late but when I put Triston on him, he didn’t score again. Triston shut him down.”
Throw in Freeman’s scoring, as well as his and Chambers’ free-throw shooting — the duo was 11 of 13 from the line in the final stanza — and the Eagles were able to go home one happy group.
Austin Moore netted nine points for Cold Springs, while Adam Carney had three. Tyler Rice and Jesse Lee contributed two apiece.
The Eagles will take on Addison next Tuesday.
% Holly Pond 100, Susan Moore 32: There was no letdown for the new No. 1 team in 3A on Friday night.
The Broncos (17-3) took quarter leads of 36-7, 60-21 and 90-28 to crush an outmatched Bulldog squad on the road.
Austin Smith (23 points), Cody Jones (17), Matt Cahoon (15) and Landen Walker (11) led the way for the Green and White. Everyone who dressed out for the game scored points.
% Cullman 86, Brewer 42: Jason McAfee made seven 3-pointers, while Seth Swalve (18 points), and Lawson Schaffer and Brontae Harris (16) lit up the scoreboard in a runaway triumph on Friday night.
Other contributors for the 6A No. 7 Bearcats (14-7) were Gage Goodwin, 10 points; Elijah Price, three; and Nic Handley, two.
The Black and Gold made 20 3-pointers in the win.
% West Point 74, Fairview 36: Doubling up a county rival and notching an area win? The Warriors will take it every time.

Varsity Girls
% Cold Springs 46, Tanner 36: Tammy West and her Lady Eagles were finally able to avenge the two Northwest Regional defeats bestowed upon them by the Rattlers the previous two seasons.
Cold Springs took 14-9, 27-19 and 36-23 quarter cushions and downed its nemesis away from home to move to 16-4 and 4-0 in the area.
“We played well, played with a lot of intensity,” West said. “We didn’t have it the last time we played them. At times, we had two or three players for us on the floor going after loose balls.”
Emme Willoughby led the way with 13 points, while Cailtyn Hall tallied 10 points, seven boards and four blocks. Keegan Johnson scored nine and came up with four steals. Camryn Crider and Bailey West tossed in six, respectively, and McKinnley Davis added two.
%West Point 51, Fairview 46: With Mallory Walker out for the season, coach John Welborn knew his team had to step it up.
That’s exactly what the Warriors did.
Despite trailing after the first three quarters, Welborn’s squad did its job late and pulled away for the five-point victory.
“They were down about Mallory,” Welborn said. “I talked the girls and said, ‘When bad things happen, you’ve got to make good things happen.’ It’s part of basketball. We were able to do that tonight. I’m really proud.”
Lexie Burdette and Jeri Beasley each dropped in 14 points, while Bailee Yearwood was good for 10. Lexi Bell added six, Madison Roberts notched four and Tess Hembree finished with three.
For Fairview, Abbi Taylor secured nine points. Other contributors were Ashley Latham, eight; Jada Golden, seven; Kayla Aleman, Lizzie Garrison and Dalys Mullican, five apiece; Taylor Ann Yeager, four; and Desiree Wilhite, two.
% Holly Pond 83, Susan Moore 38: The Lady Broncos rode hot shooting to a 61-17 halftime cushion and ran away with a solid area victory versus the Bulldogs on Friday night.
The Green and White netted 31 first-quarter points and 30 more in their sizzling second quarter. They made 11 3’s as a team in the half.
“We shot the ball really well,” coach Scott Adams said.
Meg Gambrill and Ruth Horton each scored 17 points to lead Holly Pond (14-7). Melissa Clingman (15 points), Taylor Tankersley (14), Molly Gambrill (eight), Abby Gambrill (six) and Adair Gillilan (four) also contributed.
The Broncos will travel to Fairview next Thursday.
% Brewer 56, Cullman 50: Jonathan Hayes’ squad played well but came up a little short against the Patriots on Friday.
Brewer ripped down an important offensive rebound that resulted in two free throws to go up 53-50 with about 30 seconds remaining. Cullman was unable to make a shot down the stretch, though.
“I though we fought hard to put ourselves in position to come back and give ourselves a chance to win,” Hayes said.
Baylee Johnson scored a game-high 26 points, Christina Skinner had 10, Laura Lindsey and Sierra Easterwood tallied five each, and Anna Bowden and Anna Evans contributed two apiece.
% J.B. Pennington 42, Good Hope 36: The Lady Raiders weren’t able to make it a clean sweep against the Tigers this season, falling in a tight one at home on Friday.
Kaylee Maddox had 11 points for the Red and White. Kate Kent (nine), Kelly Pickett (seven), Celest Whisenant (six), Miriam Oldacre (two) and Sadie Abbott (one) rounded out the scoring.
