- Jeffery McAnnally, left, one of the owners of Macular Health, greets Morris Mayor Joe Pylant on Monday during the company’s grand opening ceremony in Morris.
The town of Morris is the proud recipient of a north Jefferson County business that has grown by leaps and bounds since it started 11 years ago.
Macular Health opened at its new location on Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Starting in Gardendale, the company is now located at 8289 U.S. Hwy. 31 N in a building previously occupied by Farmers Trading Post.
The company has attracted the attention of the business community for it’s rapid growth: The Birmingham Business Journal last year named Macular Health as one of the top fastest-growing businesses in the Birmingham area.
Morris Mayor Joe Pylant, who attended the ceremony, said he welcomes Macular Health to Morris and looks forward to a long relationship with the company.
Jeffery McAnnally, who owns Macular Health LLC along with Dr. John Mason, said he decided to make the move when his business had outgrown its facilities yet again. This is the sixth location for Macular Health, including McAnnally and his new bride’s two-bedroom apartment when he first started the company 11 years ago.
“We keep filling buildings up as soon as we move into them,” said McAnnally.
He began the business while working at an eye foundation. After he began to find success selling the pill for macular degeneration that he created, McAnnally quit his full-time job.
“I was nervous because I didn’t know how I was going to pay for stuff,” he said.
However, the move worked out well.
Macular Health started out with one product: a pill for macular degeneration. The company is now an umbrella organization for three lines of products, including eye vitamins; the Macustrip, which is a dissolvable strip for people who have trouble taking pills; and Blephadex, which helps relieve the symptoms of inflammations that affect the eyelids.
The company now sells about a dozen products and employees more than 15 people.
The new Morris location leaves plenty of room for growth, so McAnnally is hoping that the business will stay put for a while.
Macular Health is not open to the public, but its products can be ordered online at www.macularhealth.com.
McAnnally said the company ships its products across the United States and all over the world.
