PREP BASKETBALL: Broncos start 2nd half of season with sweep of Warriors

West Point coach John Welborn gets down to the nitty gritty during a timeout Monday against Holly Pond.

WEST POINT — Cody and Drew Jones combined for 40 points and split 10 3-pointers, and Austin Smith added 17 points to push Holly Pond past West Point 76-57 Monday on the road.

On a night Mitch Morris worried about his squad being flat following a week-long stretch of Class 6A opponents around Christmas, the 3A No. 2 Broncos gave their coach a late present with a gift from just about every player.

Cody Jones led the way with 21 points, while his little brother, Drew, was hot on his heels with 19. Smith was slowed only slightly by early foul trouble, and sophomores Matt Cahoon and Bailey Smith made waves with nine and eight points, respectively.

Morris was also big on the quality minutes provided by John Phillips (two points), Nathan Duke and Landen Walker. Put them all together, and Holly Pond was able to celebrate its first victory of the New Year in a county clash that didn’t exactly come as easy as the final score indicated.

“This was a team win,” Morris said. “It didn’t feel like an 18-, 20-point game at all. But when we’re able to have that many guys contribute, offense and defense, it’s just something pretty special.”

Tanner Rusk (four points), Levi Laney (four), Ryder Jones (10) and Will Wrenn (two) helped the Warriors claw back to within six on two occasions in the third quarter, where West Point outscored the Broncos 25-20. It wasn’t long into the fourth quarter before Cody Jones and Austin Smith responded with the last two of Holly Pond’s treys, though, bolstering a timely outburst that put the visitors back up by 17.

“A team like that, when you have a few turnovers and leave some shooters open, they can score in a hurry,” West Point coach Randy Jones said. “You’ve got to give them credit. They took advantage of some of our mistakes.”

The biggest mistake in Jones’ eyes was returning to “that mode” after the red-hot third quarter that made it close.

“We make one or two turnovers and just kind of hung our head back down,” he said. “That affected our defense and everything. I told them you’ve just got to keep your head up. You’re going to make mistakes. Just keep your head up.”

The younger Jones pounded the paint with authority for a game-high 24 points. Rusk did more of his damage from outside, nailing three 3’s in a 16-point peformance. Wrenn and Laney each picked up seven points, Jacob Daniel tossed in two and Bryant Farley made a free throw.

Holly Pond was happy to start a new win streak after having its 12-game run snapped with an overtime loss to Cullman in a contentious Christmas tourney final.

Morris looked back at the Broncos’ 14-3 record in the first half of the season — but only briefly. Then it was on to 2015, where his squad is 1-0 and ready to take swipes at the county championship, the area title and beyond.

“We put that away,” Morris said. “The first half of the year was great. We did a great job with it. But we’re going to start another one. We’ve got a brand new year. We’ve got all that stuff to play for and every little game we’ve got is in preparation for that.”

West Point’s junior varsity boys ended Holly Pond’s perfect start to the season with a 47-32 triumph. The Warriors led 33-13 at halftime.

% Hayden 74, Fairview 57: Despite terrific games from Tyler Yearwood, Jackson Smith and Austin Fletcher, the Aggies were unable to slow down the offensive attack of the Wildcats on Monday.

Fletcher (18 points), Yearwood (17 points and 20 rebounds) and Smith (13 points) couldn’t quite make up for 13 made 3-pointers by the Hayden offense and 20 self-inflicted turnovers on their side of the coin.

Kyle Knop added nine points in the loss.

Varsity Girls

% Holly Pond 57, West Point 41: Meg Gambrill has found a new home.

Unlike her first few years on varsity, it’s in the paint.

The 5-foot-10 guard continued her recent transformation to post player by torching the Warriors for 32 points and 13 rebounds. The former mark matched the career high Gambrill had just set in the 3A No. 10 Lady Broncos’ last game versus 7A Buckhorn.

The senior set the tone with 20 points in the first half before putting on an absolute clinic with 12 in the third quarter. Gambrill’s jumpstarted a personal 9-0 run during the latter stretch with a 3-pointer and kept it going with a drive, putback and smooth shot from mid-range.

“Meg’s playing really well right now,” Holly Pond coach Scott Adams said. “The difference in her game is she’s going to the paint. She’s not afraid to post up. She’s getting offensive rebounds. She’s taking the ball to the basket.

“Meg really got us going.”

Ruth Horton’s back-to-back treys to open the second half sent the Broncos (12-7) well on their way to a 24-11 third quarter, which also included 3’s from Abby Gambrill and Taylor Tankersley.

Horton joined Meg Gambrill in double digits with 10 points. Melissa Clingman came close with eight. Abby Gambrill and Tankersley both touted the treys, and Kaitlyn Stephens sank an attempt at the charity stripe.

Madison Roberts carried the Warriors early with their first seven points en route to a career-high 15-point output. Jeri Beasley, who had the hot hand at the halftime buzzer and in the third quarter, finished with 11 points. Lexi Bell chipped in seven points, Mallory Walker was good for six and Lillie Burdette had two.

% Fairview 42, Hayden 39: Jada Golden tallied a team-high 15 points, as the Lady Aggies outlasted the Wildcats for a tight road victory on Monday.

Other contributors were Dalys Mullican, seven points; Ashley Latham, six; Kayla Aleman and Abbi Taylor, five apiece; and Lizzie Garrison and Taylor Ann Yeager, two each.

Fairview pulled down 16 offensive rebounds and forced 19 turnovers to pick up the triumph for Shannon Black, who will fill in as head coach for Mary Hartline during her maternity leave.
