DECATUR — Holly Pond coach Scott Adams thought superstar Meg Gambrill played the best game of her career Tuesday at the Decatur Orthopaedic Clinic Classic.
The Lady Broncos needed every bit of it to come back for a 59-56 win against the Bucks.
After trailing 10-6, 26-18 and 40-34 at each quarter break, Holly Pond broke through by outscoring Buckburn 25-16 in the final eight minutes. The biggest catalyst was Gambrill, who piled on 16 points in the quarter, 24 in the second half and a career-high 32 overall.
Though the senior did make a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch, most of her contributions came on “post-ups against girls a lot bigger than her.” Gambrill battled for her fair share of offensive boards and capitalized on her aggressiveness with 11 makes in 16 tries from the charity stripe.
The Broncos took a whopping 37 total free throws. They made 21.
Kaitlyn Stephens scored just five points but stuck on Buckhorn’s and Austin’s top offensive threats like glue the last two days of the tournament. Class 3A No. 10 Holly Pond finished 2-1 to improve to 11-7.
“She’s been a warrior for us offensively,” Adams said of Stephens.
Other contributors for the Broncos, who faced four 6A opponents in a row before battling 7A Buckhorn, were Ruth Horton, eight points; Melissa Clingman, six; Taylor Tankersley, four; Abby Gambrill, three; and Molly Gambrill, one.
% Madison Academy 52, Cold Springs 47: The Lady Eagles clawed and scratched through Tuesday’s bout against the Mustangs but just couldn’t quite overtake the Class 3A No. 2 program.
Cold Springs trailed at the quarter breaks 13-9, 25-24 and 38-36.
“We played hard and did some things well,” coach Tammy West said. “We just weren’t able to get a lead late.”
Emme Willoughby had 11 points for the 2A No. 3 Eagles (13-4), while Caitlyn Hall (10 points and 13 rebounds) and Keegan Johnson (10 points) also contributed double digits.
Bailey West collected eight points, McKinnley Davis tossed in five and Camryn Crider notched three.
