A man who was killed in a collision Friday between a train and a pickup truck has been identified.
A Jefferson County Coroner’s Office spokesman said Monday that Dennis Wayne Holt, 67, of New Castle was killed when his Ford truck was hit by a freight train on CSX Transportation tracks at McCormack Drive, near that street’s intersection with New Castle Road.
According to Gardendale Police Lt. Bryan Lynch, Holt was declared dead at the scene by Gardendale Fire and Rescue personnel.
The railroad crossing at McCormack Drive is protected only by stop signs, with no signals or gates. The rail line there has two tracks; it’s the former Louisville and Nashville Railroad’s main line between Nashville and Birmingham. The crossing is about three miles north of Boyles Yard, the major train classification yard for CSX in Birmingham.
Holt’s identity was withheld over the weekend until next of kin could be notified.
