Kaylan Hines (14) of Mortimer Jordan dribbles past Sabrina Knight (11) of Gardendale in the Rockets win over the Blue Devils on Friday night.

Gardendale was in control most of the way, but had to withstand a rally by Mortimer Jordan in the last quarter, on the way to a 67-58 Rockets’ win in Friday night girls basketball play.

The Blue Devils were ahead in the early going, but Gardendale took the lead with 3:53 in the second period, and advantage they would not relinquish — though it nearly did at times.

Jordan closed the gap to just two points on a Natalie Johnsey bucket with 6:15 left. But the Rockets’ Kelci Tuggle hit a basket and a pair of free throws in the next two plays, and the Devils never got any closer. Claire Lumpkin put the game away in the final minute by hitting 4-of-6 free throws.

Joy Sadler had a double-double for Gardendale with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Alissa Cornelius also scored 14 points and gave out six assists, and Lumpkin finished with 12 points.

Kaylan Hines paced the Devils with 13 points. Johnsey and Sarah Rickles added nine points each, and Haley Alexander had eight.
