PREP BASKETBALL: Broncos edge Hanceville 77-66, extend win streak to 4

HANCEVILLE — Holly Pond carried its late November momentum into early December with a 77-66 victory over county-rival Hanceville Tuesday night.

The Broncos (6-2) won their fourth straight matchup after claiming the crown in their Thanksgiving tournament last week.

Austin Smith continued his solid work with 23 points, while Drew Jones and Cody Jones wore out the hoops en route to 19 and 14 points, respectively.

Xavier Malcom topped the charts for the Bulldogs (3-4) with 20 points. Christian Sellers added 14 points and Jose Orozco, 12.

% Fairview 45, Russellville 43: The Aggies dug themselves out of an early 9-0 hole and held on to win their area opener Tuesday night.

Tyler Yearwood notched another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Austin Fletcher had nine points and nine boards. Other Fairview contributors were Jackson Smith, eight points and five rebounds; Kyle Knop, five points and six rebounds; Dylan Smith, two points and six assists; and Caleb Chambers, two points.

The Aggies (4-4) took a 19-18 lead into halftime after only giving up two points in the second quarter.

“We did a good job of competing one possession at a time tonight,” coach Kurt Knight said.

% West Point 71, Good Hope 22: The Warriors blitzed the Raiders behind a trio of double-digit performances by Will Wrenn, Ryder Jones and Tanner Rusk Tuesday night.

Wrenn did a little bit of everything with 19 points, nine steals and eight rebounds, Jones did his work down low with 16 points and nine boards, and Rusk rounded out the group with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Riley Voce aided the win with nine points, and Bryant Farley scored six points in his senior debut. Levi Laney added five points and Brandon Farley, four.

Mason Johnson had a team-high eight points for the Raiders. Other contributors were Noah TIllman, four points; Kainan Smith and Tyler Elrod, three apiece; and Jared McClure and Eric Murphree, two each.

% Vinemont 73, Susan Moore 41: Lance Stanley scored 21 points, and Trey Waldrep tossed in 16 as the Eagles easily rebounded from Monday’s one-point loss to Falkville.

Tyler Tucker was the last double-digit scorer for Vinemont (5-4) with 11 points. Zack Drake was close with nine. Hunter Green and Garrett Boland both had six points, and Trey Tucker tacked on four.

% St. Bernard 54, Addison 30: Dean Smith dropped in 27 points, and Christian Peterson and Gavis Harris touted 11 and 10, respectively, to lift the Saints to a big win Tuesday.

Evan Aldridge (eight points) and Jacob Grey (two) rounded out St. Bernard’s scorers.

Zach Anders led Addison with nine points.

Varsity Girls

% Holly Pond 60, Hanceville 51: The Broncos broke a three-game losing streak with a grind-it-out victory against the Bulldogs.

Holly Pond held slim 18-15, 34-33 and 49-43 advantages at each quarter break.

“I’m not really happy with the way we played, but it’s a win,” coach Scott Adams said. “Hanceville is a much-improved team. We’ve got some work to do.”

The Broncos (6-3) were paced by double-digit games from Taylor Tankersley (15 points), Ruth Horton (12), Meg Gambrill (10) and Melissa Clingman (10) to get the win.

Abby Gambrill tossed in five points, while Kaitlyn Stephens and Molly Gambrill each netted three.

Hanceville’s Taylor Hollingsworth led all players on the night with 20 points. Teammates Brooke Barnett and Karmen Johnson each dropped in eight.

Other contributors were Kaela Hall, five points; Lexi Cooper and Braylah Anderton, four apiece; and Niya Evans, two.

% Addison 43, St. Bernard 28: The Lady Saints were victim to a tough second quarter on Tuesday evening en route to a double-digit loss to the Bulldogs.

Addison outscored St. Bernard 16-4 in the stanza to nab a 24-12 halftime cushion and coast to the victory.

Alli Messick had 15 points for the Saints; Zana Wilson was good for 10; Tania Martinez collected two; and Avy Whaley sank a free throw for St. Bernard (5-5).

Jessica Benton scored 18 points to lead the 3-2 Bulldogs.
