HOLLY POND — One night after a defensive struggle, West Point turned on its offense in the second half to pummel J.B. Pennington 92-61 in the first round of the Holly Pond Thanksgiving Tournament.

Ryder Jones torched the Tigers for 40 points on an unbelievably efficient evening that included a mere four missed shots. The senior, who also snagged rebounds, was 15 of 17 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.

Tanner Rusk (12 points), Seth Parker (12) and Levi Laney (11) also landed in double figures for West Point, which broke open a 43-43 game at halftime with 27 points in the third quarter. J.B. Pennington only countered with eight.

Other contributors for the Warriors (3-2) were Riley Voce, six points and seven rebounds; Kobe Smith, six points; Jacob Daniel, three points; and Will Wrenn, two.

West Point will take its three-game win streak into Thursday’s semifinal against Holly Pond. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m.

The Tigers, who received 17 points from Christian Baker and 16 from Mauricio Hernandez, will play Arab at 4 p.m.

% Vinemont 75, Locust Fork 69: The Eagles won their second thriller in as many days, surviving an overtime clash with the Hornets in first-round action Wednesday at Holly Pond.

Tyler Tucker made seven 3-pointers for Vinemont to finish with a game-high 26 points. Lance Stanley added 21 in the victory. Trey Waldrep collected 11 points; Zack Drake, seven; Trey Tucker, six; and Garrett Boland, four.

The Eagles will take on Hartselle in the second round Thursday at 7 p.m.

% Holly Pond 79, Arab 64: The hosts turned out the lights on the Knights with a 33-point second quarter in the final game of Wednesday’s holiday slate.

Austin Smith topped the Broncos with 20 points. Matt Cahoon was close behind with 18. Drew Jones had 16.

Holly Pond, which led 51-27 at halftime, improved to 3-2.

Fairview will face Locust Fork Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament

% Cold Springs 70, Corner 42: The Eagles punched their ticket to the championship with an all-around masterpiece Wednesday.

Triston Chambers had 27 points — all in the first half — and six assists, while Josh Freeman tossed in 24 points. Cold Springs, which improved to 6-0, will take on Dora in the title tilt Friday at 7 p.m.

“Overall, offensively, our execution was the best it’s been this year,” coach Tim Willoughby said.

The Eagles only touted seven turnovers. Willoughby said they were outrebounded 29-27, but only because their high shooting percentage didn’t afford many opportunities.

Drennen Hutchins paced Corner with 15 points. The Yellow Jackets will play Hanceville Friday at 5:30 p.m.

% Hanceville 56, Mortimer Jordan 53: The Bulldogs had just enough juice from a bye the night before to squeak past the Blue Devils Wednesday.

Xavier Malcom bolstered a 27-point performance with a 9-of-10 mark from the charity stripe. Christian Sellers contributed seven points and nine rebounds, and C.J. White added nine points.

Mortimer Jordan’s Dalton Hudson and Patrick Burkett had 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Hanceville lost to Dora 73-52 later in the evening.

% Cleveland 56, Good Hope 55: The Raiders nearly pulled off their first win with their best game of the winter Wednesday.

Stats were unknown.

Good Hope will wrap up in Hanceville Friday at 3 p.m.

Cleveland and Mortimer Jordan will follow at 4:15 p.m.

Lady Hawks Thanksgiving Classic

% Cold Springs 51, Oneonta 47: Despite what coach Tammy West surmised was “a very, very, very poor shooting performance,” the Eagles did just enough to ease by the Redskins and into the semifinals.

Cold Springs led by just one with less than seven seconds and Oneonta with the ball. But a technical foul was called on the Redskins following an illegal timeout. Emme Willoughby sank a couple of free throws shortly after to preserve the win.

McKinnley Davis turned in a double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds), while Willoughby scored 10 points. Bailey West was good for eight points; Caitlyn Hall, five; and Keegan Johnson and Camryn Crider, three apiece.

The Eagles (5-1) will play Decatur Friday at 12:40 p.m.

% West Point 46, Sardis 33: Mallory Walker made up for a frustrating morning with 25 points in the Warriors’ second victory in three games over a two-day span.

West Point, fresh off a close win versus Hartselle the previous night, started the tourney with a loss to Decatur early Wednesday. The Warriors’ reward for beating Sardis was a quick rematch with Hartselle Friday at 2 p.m. at Falkville.

“We played three games in 24 hours. That’s tough,” coach John Welborn said. “My girls got so tired we didn’t even score in the fourth quarter of our last game. But we won anyway.”

Other West Point (4-2) contributors were Jeri Beasley, nine points; Lexi Bell, Bailee Yearwood and Lillie Burdette, three each; Lexie Burdette, two; and Tess Hembree, one.

% Athens 50, Holly Pond 47: The Lady Broncos were sent to the consolation bracket after they couldn’t hold on to a 30-23 halftime cushion late Wednesday night.

The loss was Holly Pond’s first of the season. The Broncos (5-1) will play Brindlee Mountain Friday at 10 a.m.

% Falkville 53, Fairview 46: The Aggies led 17-7 after the first quarter before the Blue Devils chipped away at the deficit to force overtime and take the win Wednesday.

Stats were unknown.
